Review

“That she is so candidly aware of her own shortcomings . . . makes the journey of discovery with her great fun.”—USA Today   “Kelly Corrigan wrote the book—well, make that four—on the heart-tugging joyride that happens in real life. Whether she’s being diagnosed with cancer in her thirties or watching her bigger-than-life father beat cancer or wryly observing other family members as well as herself, Corrigan’s books are inspiring as well as so much fun to read.”—Parade“With heartfelt humor and penetrating insight, Corrigan uses the pain, anguish, failure, and occasional successes in her life to explore the vital connection between the words we say and the relationships we develop, both with the people around us and ourselves. Punctuated with her signature warmth and unflinching honesty, her introspective musings gush with empathy for every partner, parent, child, or friend who has said the wrong thing at the wrong time. At times laugh-out-loud funny but overwhelmingly bittersweet, this brief book spans time and experience to drive home a seemingly simple but significant message: finding the right words is a lifelong journey. Other phrases include ‘I Love You’ and ‘No Words at All.’ Moving and deeply personal, Corrigan’s portraits of love and loss urge readers to speak more carefully and hold on tighter to the people they love.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“This book is beautiful. It’s funny and real and fearless and deep in a way that made me grateful it exists.”—Judd Apatow   “Tell Me More, a memoir so beautifully honest in its depiction of love and loss, transformed me.”—Imbolo Mbue, New York Times bestselling author of Behold the Dreamers“Tell Me More is a testament to the idea that the things we say matter, that our words have the power to comfort and uplift, empower and inspire. Kelly Corrigan takes on all the big, difficult questions here, with great warmth and courage. As life unfolds, this is a book I will go back to again and again.”—Glennon Doyle“It is such a comfort just knowing that Kelly Corrigan exists: she is somehow both wise and self-deprecating; funny but unafraid of pain; frank but gentle. She is the sister/mother/best friend we all wish we could have—and because of this big-hearted book, we all get to.”—Ariel Levy, author of The Rules Do Not Apply“With full-bodied humor and radical sensitivity, Kelly Corrigan transforms the mundane pain of life into a necessary spiritual text of sorts, one that reminds us that we have the right to grieve but the obligation to be grateful. This book will remind you that you are human—and of the fragile loveliness of being so.”—Lena Dunham

I have read every one of Kelly Corrigan’s books. I was waiting, excitedly, for her newest TELL ME MORE: STORIES ABOUT THE 12 HARDEST THINGS I’M LEARNING TO SAY. I wanted to be able to absorb it with no distractions, full eyes, and knowing that her words were going to speak to me. Just as the messages in her other books did. Kelly writes with such conviction and just the right nuance of humor, about subjects that are both challenging as well as the everyday. Nailing it every time.Whether thinking about her departed larger than life father, Greenie, or her dearest friend Liz, who also passed away, way too soon, but who lives on for Kelly through her children, with whom she remains so close.Tell me more, Kelly. “It’s like this.” That last paragraph. I have re-read it several times and plan to again and again. Ground control. I could barely get through it. In a good way. I might have snorted when she wrote that her daughters know more about “JoJo and Jordan from The Bachelorette than with Jacob and Joseph from the Bible” after watching Ruby up on the bimah. My laughter was probably audible down the street when she talks about her teenage daughters as you can just visualize each scenario: Kelly feels like an underappreciated chauffeur, has had more eye rolls than a woman deserves in a lifetime, but she gives as well as she gets. I can relate like we were separated at birth with her own teen years laid out in one sentence through a TV show, popular singer, and pantry item. You do not need to be grieving, nor a parent, to read TELL ME MORE. Just human with a soul. Kelly dishes some of the best wisdom that a person can give in this book about things that you wish you knew in advance of the hard stuff that inevitably comes.I am not a fan of self-help books at all. Never was, not sure I ever will be. But give me a memoir that is thoughtful, introspective and is not forcing a way of life on you and I am all in. This is the kind of book that you come away from feeling like you had a great weekend with a trusted friend. Refreshed, reflective, the best cry ever, and oh, the laughter.

This book was absolutely beautiful. Beautifully written, instantly drawing you in, evoking emotions, making you think. I laughed a lot of genuine laughter and I cried many, many tears. Thank you Kelly Corrigan for letting me feel so many emotions while reading your lovely book.I've been recommending this book to EVERYONE I know, I've even sent out emails. For what its worth I've read 14 books in 5 weeks of 2018 and this is one of two that I've found to be worth of recommendation.

I have had “Tell Me More” on my TBR stack for some time yet I was hesitant to read because of the subject matter. But, it’s due at the Library tomorrow so I committed yesterday to reading the first few chapters. Needless to say, Kelly Corrigan and I have a lot in common and I loved the entire book. My biggest takeaway is giving myself permission to forgive my shortcomings as a parent. I don’t think anyone has this job perfected but I’m “Good Enough.” One on my favorite quotes: “Accepting things as they are is difficult. A lot of people go to war with reality.” Kelly Corrigan has that right...life is messy so you keep moving onward and appreciate what you have in the moment. Well done! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #positive #acceptance #forgiveness #life #love #family #mistakes #victories #supporting #loyal #loss #books #books #bookstagram @kellycorrigan #tellmemore #parenting @penguinrandomhouse @randomhouse #kellycorrigan #damnstraight @annebogel #mmdIG: @bookbimbo

I chose to read this book expecting something completely different. I was captivated by Kelly’s honesty and humor. I wish she were my friend or at least a next door neighbor.

The latest from Kelly Corrigan was as honest and sincere as anything of hers that I’ve read. After a year (2016) that ended with challenge and disruption, this was a gentle reminder of how necessary it still is, and how empowering it can be, to take time to reflect, honor and heal after loss - or simply as a way to grow in life. The insights are at once universal, and uniquely personal. Kelly Corrigan is the best mentor I’ve ever wished I had, and fictitiously claimed for personal reference....Thank you, once again, Ms. Corrigan.

I love this book. I love Kelly Corrigan's voice, her views on friendship and motherhood and marriage--everything. This book kept me company through a very tense time in my life, and I carried it everywhere with me. It made me both laugh and cry. I know everyone says this, but it was honestly like having a delightful, real conversation with a very good friend.

I was really looking forward to this book, but I didn't even make it through the entire book. I read the first 141 pages, but then I had to stop. I had read enough about human feces on the bathroom floor. The author's foul-mouthed language is over the top at times -- a real turn off. Too bad -- it definitely had potential at times.

I have been looking forward to this book for so long! Read it in a day, as I have with all of her others. Kelly has the unique ability to make you feel as though she is speaking to you and only you. She keeps it real and grabs you from the first page. Always laugh out loud and cry when reading her words. Looking forward to seeing Kelly in the Bay Area in February.

Vibrant Matter: A Political Ecology of Things (a John Hope Franklin Center Book)

Review

“Jane Bennett’s Vibrant Matter is an important work, linking critical movements in recent continental philosophy, namely a vitalist tradition that runs from Bergson to Deleuze and even, on Bennett’s reading, to Bruno Latour, and (on the other hand) a ‘political ecology of things’ that should speak to anyone conscious enough to be aware of the devastating changes underway in the world around us. There is good reason Bennett’s book has, in short order, gained a wide following in disparate areas of political theory and philosophy.” - Peter Gratton, Philosophy in Review“For the sake of assuaging harms already inflicted we have always cobbled together publics that deal with vibrant matters of floods, fires, earthquakes and so on. For the sake of preventing unseen future harms, Bennett’s book argues that we need to take a closer look at how we are embedded in a web of mutual affect that knows no bounds between living and nonliving, human and nonhuman. It is in this refreshingly naïve ‘no-holds-barred’ approach that Bennett’s work has much to offer for a reconsideration of our role as thinking, speaking humans in a cosmos of vibrant matter that we continually depoliticize even in our efforts to ‘protect’ and ‘save’ the earth . . . a highly recommended read.” - Stefan Morales, M/C Reviews“Jane Bennett’s Vibrant Matter is an admirable book for at least three reasons. First, it is wonderfully written in a comfortable personal style, which is rare enough for academic books. Second, Bennett makes an explicit break with the timeworn dogmas of postmodernist academia. . . . The third pointthat makes this book admirable is Bennett’s professional position: Chair ofPolitical Science at Johns Hopkins University. That someone in a PoliticalScience department at an important university could write as candid a workof metaphysics as Vibrant Matter is an encouraging sign. Perhaps philosophical speculation on fundamental topics is poised for a comeback throughout the humanities. “ - Graham Harman, New Formations“Vibrant Matter is a fascinating, lucid, and powerful book of political theory. By focusing on the ‘thing-side of affect,’ Jane Bennett seeks to broaden and transform our sense of care in relation to the world of humans, non-human life, and things. She calls us to consider a ‘parliament of things’ in ways that provoke our democratic imaginations and interrupt our anthropocentric hubris.”—Romand Coles, author of Beyond Gated Politics: Reflections for the Possibility of Democracy“Vibrant Matter represents the fruits of sustained scholarship of the highest order. As environmental, technological, and biomedical concerns force themselves onto worldly political agendas, the urgency and potency of this analysis must surely inform any rethinking of what political theory is about in the twenty-first century.”—Sarah Whatmore, coeditor of The Stuff of Politics: Technoscience, Democracy, and Public Life“This manifesto for a new materialism is an invigorating breath of fresh air. Jane Bennett’s eloquent tribute to the vitality and volatility of things is just what we need to revive the humanities and to redraw the parameters of political thought.”—Rita Felski, author of Uses of Literature “Orienting us to re-encounter both nature and familiar objects as newly strange and pulsing with ‘thing-power,’ Bennett challenges our worn assumptions concerning the hierarchy between humans and things, the workings of causality, and our deep cultural attachment to matter and nature as inanimate. . . . Her book is surprising, refreshing, and troubling.” (Lori J. Marso Political Theory)“For the sake of assuaging harms already inflicted we have always cobbled together publics that deal with vibrant matters of floods, fires, earthquakes and so on. For the sake of preventing unseen future harms, Bennett’s book argues that we need to take a closer look at how we are embedded in a web of mutual affect that knows no bounds between living and nonliving, human and nonhuman. This is an exceptionally well reasoned religious tract that defines and the argues for the importance and, then, the value of a worldview in which 1) all matter is accorded a kind of equivalent respect, from human beings to animals microbes plants and other living things, as well as inorganic/inanimate matter, include stone, sand , metals, down to their molecular structure and sub-atomic components. In essence she "fuses" the reductionist and its opposite holistic or emergent properties of matter 2) This respect arises from the agency that all matter and assemblages of matter possess 3) this worldview should drive a more comprehensive understanding and humble respect for the complex interrelationships between matter and it temporal/multidimensional property of existence. In the end--the last few lines of the book-- she observes (concedes?) that her ontology consists of a kind of "Nicene Creed for materialists, which is quite elegant, and well worth the effort required to plough through dense arguments laced with generous helping of Spinoza, Kant, Nietzsche, Foucault, Deleuze, their disciples and numerous proponents of new wave environmentalism.

In Jane Bennett’s "Vibrant Matter: A Political Ecology of Things", she explores the role of inanimate bodies and how humans interact with them. "Vibrant Matter" serves as Bennett’s manifesto for the benefits of anthropomorphizing. Bennett writes, “I believe it is wrong to deny vitality to nonhuman bodies, forces, and forms, and that a careful course of anthropomorphization can help reveal that vitality, even though it resists full translation and exceeds my comprehensive grasp. I believe that encounters with lively matter can chasten my fantasies of human mastery, highlight the common materiality of all that is, expose a wider distribution of agency, and reshape the self and its interests” (pg. 122). To this end, Bennett uses various case studies to expand her readers’ understanding of what agency is and who or what is capable of possessing and using agency. Some of these agents include worms, the electrical grid, and accumulations of detritus in a storm drain. Bennett writes with the goal of shaping consciousness in order to expand humanity’s understanding of its place in the world. She writes, “My hunch is that the image of dead or thoroughly instrumentalized matter feeds human hubris and our earth-destroying fantasies of conquest and consumption” (pg. ix).Bennett examines the historical debate over a mechanistic or essential arrangement of life. Describing the situating of a basic essence in each subject, Bennett writes, “While I agree that human affect is a key player, in this book the focus is on an affect that is not only not fully susceptible to rational analysis or linguistic representation but that is also not specific to humans, organisms, or even to bodies: the affect of technologies, winds, vegetables, minerals” (pg. 61). She writes of these philosophers’ work, “Something always escaped quantification, prediction, and control. They named that something élan vital” (pg. 63). According to Bennett, Driesch’s goal “was not simply to gain a more subtle understanding of the dynamic chemical and physical properties of the organism but also to better discern what animated the machine” (pg. 71). This recalls the words Master Yoda spoke to Luke Skywalker on Dagobah, “For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree, the rock, everywhere, yes.” In sum, Bennett’s manifesto demonstrates the importance of resituating humanity’s place in the world by placing humanity within the world rather than outside of it.

Bennett has a wonderful mind.

Uses Karen Barad's theory of Agential Realism. Thoughtful research.

Such a wonderful book. Jane Bennett has changed my views on "things" in a most profound way that has affected both my scholarship and my personal attitude toward the world of materials.

I think this book--maybe more than any other--set the bar for the new work on vitalist materialism and object oriented ontology. It is not necessarily the most integrative book you will read on vital matter. It drifts around and some of the author's commitments are only sketched out and then--later--loosely realized, or just generally affirmed. But her overall claims and direct approach kept coming back to me. I've used this book in an advanced seminar and the students took to it more quickly than I did. I think it set the tone for work that was to come. An important read--and fun to think through.

A little fuzzy. I think Thomas Rickert laid it out a bit more eloquently, but she's certainly painstaking in her logic. I don't think she took it far enough, though. Or maybe in the wrong direction. Individual bodies are ecologies, too, and they negotiate with other ecologies all the time. THAT'S the rhetorical battlefield. The trick is to keep it from turning into WWIII.

I recently taught Jane Bennett's book "Vibrant Matter" in a class on Environmental Theory, and I found it intriguing, challenging, and completely rewarding. My students really seemed to enjoy grappling with Bennett's concepts and the way she weaves a variety of texts and examples together throughout the chapters. Even when Bennett's questions are left unanswered, this is a productive tactic: many of my students took up her open-ended questions in their papers, extending her observations and complex formulations and applying them to local matters. Bennett's book worked very well alongside Timothy Morton's book "The Ecological Thought," Jennifer Price's book "Flight Maps," Arun Agrawal's book "Environmentality," Kathleen Stewart's "Ordinary Affects," and Donna Haraway's book "When Species Meet" (among a few other shorter texts that we read in between these). While definitely demanding at times, the narrative of "Vibrant Matter" is so articulated and strong that the book stands out as a philosophical/theoretical *story*, of sorts. (This was another aspect of the book that made it very teachable.) Bennett's book is speculative and picaresque, but absolutely rigorous and totally genuine. "Vibrant Matter" may frustrate readers looking for step-by-step instructions for a 'political ecology' -- but if readers want a fantastic book to think with, a book that piques philosophical imagination and merges it with ecology, then "Vibrant Matter" is it.

Review

“A wonderfully concise appeal for presentness...Elegantly stated.” ―The Boston Globe“Missing Out is [Adam Phillips's] most poetic, paradoxical, repetitive, and punning yet; he doesn't argue in a linear fashion but nestles ideas within ideas, like Russian dolls.” ―Sheila Heti, The New York Times Book Review“[Adam Phillips] has an elegant prose style...with a talent for turning a phrase, a knack for epigrams” ―Los Angeles Review of Books“Extraordinary…Always humane, never reductive, Phillips is one of those writers whom it is a pleasure simply to hear think.” ―The Sunday Telegraph (London)

I will admit that the end lacked the same substance as the beginning, but the beginning makes the book worth reading. Reading the reviews I was surprised to see so many negative comments, although upon reflection, the book is obviously not for everyone. I bought it after reading Joan Acocella's review in the New Yorker. She did not particularly like the book or understand it, so I figured there was probably something there. I was not disappointed.

Reading Adam Phillips' "Missing Out: In Praise of the Unlived Life" is like driving in New York City traffic - at first it's unnerving, confusing and one isn't quite sure what to make of it; but after a while, if you steel your will, continue the effort and don't pull off to the side of the road, you fall into its own particular rhythms, go with the flow, and it all begins to make intoxicating sense. I found this book to be one of the most powerful and, at the same time, one of the most difficult books I've ever read. But I arrived at my destination exhilarated, with few dents and scratches, and feeling as though it had been well worth the effort to stay focused on where this book can take you.

This was a fascinating analytic look at our desires, wants and needs. How we satisfy our frustrations and unmet wishes. Complex but fascinating to think about!

I heard that Adam Phillips was coming to town to speak and so I investigated and this is the book I chose because it was a topic (missing out) that wove through my life and the life of so many clients.I suggest you read the book the same way that Adam suggested we listen and talk during the day we got to be with him in person: let yourself free associate. If you do, you will find your mind wandering in very useful directions. What I got out of it was the permission to live in all parts of my mind: the 'real' life I have now, and the 'lost' life that I had thought I'd have and didn't, and the 'imagined' life: what I can still hope for for myself in the future. Its a worthy book! if it does have its dry moments.

I'll repaste here what I just reviewed of another of his books, Unforbidden Pleasures, because the two go together. I read Adam Phillips "Missing Out". The topic and review sounded fascinating, unusual, something to broaden the thinking and challenge the mind. I was disappointed, and in reading the generous Look Inside of Unforbidden Pleasures it seems the same. Phillips seems very intelligent, extremely well read, puts a lot of work into his books, yet somehow manages to leave me wondering what insight I'm supposed to have received from what he just said. Like he can't get his words out of his own way so he can say what he thinks. Every once in a while he starts to write lucidly and you think, at last, here we go, and then he's back into muddled writing. This book sounds like another fascinating idea, and when I first started reading the Look Inside (lots of pages, presumably chosen by the author to best represent the book) I didn't even remember this was the same author, but as I read the fuzzy writing I had a sense of deja vu. Then I realized it's the same author as Missing Out. I think he has a lot to offer. I wish some very involved editor or a co-author could collaborate and get his insights clearly down on paper.

Sheer genius and deep.Overly well written. Can help you understand yourself and your course of life.

This a very interesting and insightful read by a skilled observer of human nature.

might be better for those more literary than me. interestin topic, but many literary references that i didn't have patience for

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of April 2018: In her latest collection of essays, Sloane Crosley demonstrates, yet again, a knack for making the mundane miraculous. Reading Look Alive Out There is like listening to your smartest, funniest friend regale you about their (mis)adventures, be it waging war on a rude neighbor, making an ill-conceived climb up a volcano, or helping a swinger couple pick out a third (as you do). And like a friend, Crosley is not afraid to veer into vulnerable territory, which reveals the growth of a writer who first displayed her sardonic wit and keen appreciation of the absurd in, I Was Told There’d Be Cake. It’s as good a time as any to be reminded that life is full of good humor, but only a select few do that as well as Sloane Crosley. --Erin Kodicek, Amazon Book Review

If Emily Dickinson had run away from home to live in nyc and grown a sorely needed sense of cute, she would have written like a 19th century Sloane Crosley. If you're looking to revive some of those early brain synapses that get deactivated between six and 18 months of age, read this intelligent book. It was a revelation to me to read the many negative reviews of her first book of essays (which is just as good as this one). When I was a kid, I never said it out loud but I often thought to myself, Duh, I don't get it. So, I grew up thinking there was basically just one way of not getting it. But all these one and two star reviews show that there are quite a few ways.

I laughed out loud. Crosley speaks to (and from) my soul with her audacity and humor. An unabashed New Yorker, she had me from the start with her opening essay, Wheels Up, about hailing a cab to get to the airport. Without revealing too much, she’s trying to be a nice person, yet is vilified in the end. It has happened to all of us, and it’s an example of how Crosley takes the banal and turns it into an entertaining and witty narrative.Crosley often uses the unique quirkiness of New York as her subject’s backdrop, and she’s fortunate to have interesting family and travels to add to the mix. She shares stories of her mountain climbing adventure in Ecuador, connected with a pretty shady guide; her porn star uncle on the west coast; and her cocky, teenage neighbor with whom she has ever simmering scuffle. There are uncomfortable and comical misunderstanding with neighbors and the “wolf” that snatched her URL while she wasn’t paying attention.Life is tough. Look Alive Out There makes is a lot more interesting. I’m looking forward to more from Sloane Crosley.

I have yet to find a book of essays that comes close to The Opposite of Loneliness- but this one certainly did. So much wit! And she's a phenomenal writer.... she has a wide vocabulary which I appreciate but others may find too extra.

This collection of essays was both entertaining and thought provoking. I enjoy Ms. Crosley’s writing style very much. Some laugh out loud writing here. She is a keen observer of human behavior and particularly enjoyed her insight and observations on modern female issues.

Read it in well under 24 hours. Can Sloane do any wrong? I related so much to her city experiences of loud obnoxious neighbors and experience in online illness forums. Knocks it out of the park as usual.

Sloane Crossley manages to be downright hilarious and deep at the same time. Incredibly well-written. I savoured every chapter but finished the book in a few hours because I couldn’t put it down. I will definitely read her other collections as well!

Great book of essays. I can totally relate to her stories in the book. The writing style is wonderful. I will look for more of Sloan's books :)

It’s about time. This collection is a welcome relief from the craziness of life. You can laugh aloud in small bites of essays/stories that are marvelously entertaining. Or devour it all at once. In either case you’ll end up being hungry for more. Cannot wait for the next collection.
