This is a useful overview of the current state of artificial intelligence. The author has clearly been swimming in these waters during his academic studies and professional career. I came away with the sense that his thoughts and observations were based on close personal experience and careful analysis. If the area interests you, I think that you'll find that Dr. Kaplan is an experienced guide. What are some of the major areas that the book examines? He examines the definition of artificial intelligence, considers its intellectual history and explores the frontiers of robotics, computer vision and speech recognition. As he looks at the philosophy of AI, he explains his position on whether computers can think, have free will, possess consciousness, and have feelings. He doesn't think they do and deems it unlikely that they will. The author also examines the effect of AI on law, human labor (basically jobs) and social equity. These issues currently affect much of our political discourse. Since I think that much of our society fails to appreciate the economic and social effects of technology, the book addresses matters that, in my opinion, need more of society's attention. The book looks at the possible future impact of AI. The author believes that the future impact of AI will likely mirror that of other technological advances; in other words, that with time AI will be viewed as simply another tool to be employed for good or ill.You should be aware that the book takes time examining philosophical issues such as can intelligence be defined or accurately measured (probably not in the author's view), what are free will and consciousness (difficult to define in humans and probably impossible to define in machines) and feelings (whether computers will ever have feelings is mostly a matter of a human's personal choice). Will artificially intelligent machines ever rule over us (probably not, but no one's 100% sure)? This reminded me of another book published by Oxford on Complexity which described emergent conditions such as one or a number of water molecules do not possess the condition that we call "wetness," but a lot of water molecules in one place are commonly described as "wet". Maybe if we get enough of these machines connected and operated under a range of algorithms, then humans may discover that, as a large number of water molecules are "wet," a large interconnection of computers suitably programmed may start to look "intelligent," whatever we may mean by that.Dr. Kaplan provides a broad and useful overview of artificial intelligence. If the topic interests you, I recommend it.

Kaplan moves easily from weak and strong AI, automation to robotics, humans to autonomous beings. At first....I thought this was utter nonsense, but as I read on, I realized there is an element of genius to this approach---being, that's how AI is now...and will be in the future. AI isn't new, and is already quite pervasive in our society. My only real complaint, is that moving so casually between levels of AI, it seemed cavalier and confusing at times. I guess the reader is to assume that strong AI is possible...or that digital brains in humans is possible. There are bits of sci-fi he used in the storytelling that undermined his personal ideology, which is...we are nowhere close to strong AI (I also believe this). Nonetheless, it was a good read. I would recommend this book to other people.

This is a quick and informative read. First, what is AI (it's essentially automation), what are the techniques and how is it advancing ? I got a little bored with the discussion of Free Will and whether AI can exhibit, and not just simulate, human traits, but at least it was brief. More interesting and even quite scary was the prediction of how AI will in the next 20 years or so replace many human workers, possibly 40% or even as many as 70% as I interpret the text. The author offers some ideas about how to handle the economic disruption, but the situation looks pretty grim to me. Good to know about it, though. Finally, I am a little less worried about the Singularity (Skynet / Terminator). These AI are appliances and nowhere near human level -- yet.

The book is OK. It has interesting parts, is easy to read and gives a general overview that will be of interest to many. However, in my view, it is too simplistic, at least for those who already have a basic understanding of AI. As many, many books on AI it hardly scratches the surface, and gives little understanding of the inner workings and real cases applicability.I admit I may be asking too much from this book, but I was expecting more depth. Also, in the last chapters, the author goes off the tangent and starts treating topics that can hardly be considered AI.

Less on hype more on practical developments in AI.Great read and well written in easy to read language without a lot of jargon

Cuts through the hype and helps the reader glean some useful knowledge about the topic. The author frames the "why" very well, which helps understand how AI is being used today, and where it might go next. The book is pretty jargon-free, so the concepts should be quite accessible for most readers.

Very informative and well written providing excellent understanding of a difficult subject.

Good introduction for non-IT specialists with great references for anyone who wishes to pursue issues to a deeper level

I bought this book due to its being advertised as "a guide to convent & monastery accommodation in Europe". It says that right on the cover in the subtitle! In reality, it merely lists convents and monasteries with contact information (phone, address, e-mail address, etc.) For a few, the author goes into a little more detail in the text. But it's hard to find useful information due to the book's poor organization. If you read the book from front to back, you'll find it contains some useful information and interesting stories. But it's difficult to find information on specific locations without reading an entire section (country). For example, in a look through the index, one will quickly see there is no listing for Lisieux, La Salette, Ars, and I could go on and on. I've yet to find Ars mentioned in the book at all. This town gave us a man who is probably the greatest French Catholic Priest of all time. Ars has wonderful pilgrim facilities and deserves at least a mention. Lisieux and La Salette are covered in their geographic region but, without a listing in the index, one must dig to find them. The book divides locations into groups by "open houses", "spiritual retreats" and "pilgrimages". This is a nonsensical division for a religious guidebook. Most religious places are all of those things. Travellers, including those interested in spiritual destinations need guides organized and indexed by location. Where there are geographic divisions, they are odd. For example, Versailles is listed in the section on Chartres. Most people venture to Versailles as a side-trip from Paris. The book is pretty; it makes a great coffee table decoration and conversation starter. It has beautiful pictures but it lacks useful maps and directions as a guidebook. Each section has a single country map; I should call it a drawing. They are more artistic than functional. They are difficult to read. They are printed on dark pages with light, small font. They have no legends other than a compass but that's the one thing we could do without as most travellers know "North" on a map of France, the U.K. or Ireland. They show only town names; no roads, railroads, etc. Unnecessary and oversized symbols are featured: the Eiffel Tower, grapes, bagpipes,a leprechaun, and a shamrock, among others. The book tries to be too much - an accommodation guide and a tour guidebook while also being nice to look at. As an accommodation guide, it's incomplete and lacks details, requiring the reader to go elsewhere for what they bought the book for. As a tour guide, it mentions many secular sights for which the buyer isn't interested or could find in any secular guidebook. Space wasted on Montparnasse Tower and Galeries Lafayette, really? A simple listing of what's near a holy sight would suffice. That is, the same kind of skeleton detail that is provided for the accommodations (the subtitle of this book). There is even 1/3 of a page about a convent in Connecticut, USA in the France section; interesting but irrelevant. The last straw for me was when I started finding errors in the detail. For example, see these 4 errors described by page number. Page 114 - St. Vincent de Paul's incorrupt heart is not kept above the church altar in the Chapel of St Vincent de Paul. His (corrupt) body is inside a wax replica, sans his heart, above the altar in the chapel of the motherhouse of the Congregation of the Mission at 95 rue de Sevres in the 6th arrondissement. (The church of St. Vincent de Paul is in the 10th arrondissement.) The saint's incorrupt heart is in the Chapel of the Miraculous Medal which is just around the corner from Rue de Sevres, but you wouldn't know that proximity from this "guidebook". Page 123 - St. Therese of Lisieux's "incorrupt body" in the glass reliquary in the chapel of the Carmelite Convent is neither incorrupt nor her body; it is a statue. Her corrupt body is beneath the copy. Page 127 - The La Salette stations of the cross referred to do not go up the "mountain". They go up a small slope of the valley from which Our Lady of La Salette first appeared to Maxim and Melanie, to the point where she departed them, some 30 feet away. Our Lady wore a crucifix, not a cross. The children saw Jesus as if both dead and alive (His eyes open) at different times on this crucifix. The tools on either end were those of the crucifixion. The hammer symbolized sin; the pincers or pliers, the reparation of sin. Page 334 - The index is inconsistently alphabetized. See entries for "La _" then "La Maison _" in the next column.A more useful pilgrim's travel guidebook is the Catholic Shrines of Western Europe by Kevin J. Wright. But I'll keep Good Night & God Bless for when I have time to read it from cover to cover and take notes for my own indexing and future travel use. Just don't buy it with the expectation of quickly finding useful accommodation listings and details, or if your trip is near in time as it will prove frustrating in your planning. If you're developing a long term "dream" itinerary or doing arm-chair touring, it will provide interesting ideas for further research and verification. I've read many books, including guidebooks, but never reviewed any. This one frustrated me to the point of feeling obligated to warn others. Buyer beware!

good read thnx

This is a beautiful book with rounded corners and high quality print and pages. The content is helpful. My only complaint is that there are no pictures at all! A real disappointment for me!

Yes! It has a great tips on places to stay with full descriptions about amenities field trips and culinary.

Coming from a publishing background, I have to admit, I'm a sucker for a beautifully packaged book, and this is one. From it's beautifully designed, glossy paper cover, to its rounded edges, to the very well-laid-out pages, this book is a joy to read. Granted, some of the text is a tad small, but my eyesight hasn't gone yet... :)Its content is thoroughly researched and well-written. Just looking at this book makes me want to travel.

Susan Bell uses examples from well-known literary works to illustrate the value of editing. This worked well for me. I particularly enjoyed the Great Gatsby examples where she used excerpts from earlier drafts of Fitzgerald's book and contrasts them to the final result. The revelations produced were fascinating and enticing. By revealing the nuances of editing from an editor's perspective, a writer begins to understand the process and the purpose of revision and polish. Bell's focus, though, is on the craft of self-editing. She convinces the reader of the power of that. Many authors see writing as a creative experience. They revel in that and leave the editing to someone else, but delivering a mess to an editor means he will be overwhelmed, possibly choked, and the author will be shocked to see his creation so justifiably desecrated. Bell helps the reader see that the craft of editing is a vital and intrinsic part of the process of writing and a key to a polished, readable, enjoyable piece of literature. It is also a key to a writer's reputation as a master of his profession. I've read a multitude of books on writing and this is one of my favorites.

Susan Bell teaches writers what editors do, hoping this will reduce frustration for both. She hopes that "[t]his book will not eliminate the need for an outside editor, but it will minimize it. When writers learn how to better edit themselves, editors will not be out of jobs; rather they will be working with texts at a more advanced stage, and their work will be less an act of excavation than one of refinement."The book's first chapter teaches writers eleven strategies for gaining perspective on what they have written--and grown overly close to. These strategies range from abstract perspective shifting to physical techniques, such as hanging the pages of a chapter on a clothesline to observe the pattern of text across the pages. The second chapter tells authors how to evaluate their writing at the "macro" level, focusing on organization, structure and the sequence and flow of ideas. The third chapter dives to the micro level, helping writers with subtle language choices in sentence-by-sentence writing. We learn to evaluate writing for its repetition, redundancy, clarity, authenticity, continuity, and other well-chosen principles. Bell's fourth chapter presents several extended case studies of writers and their editors working together. The fifth and final chapter traces the development of editing as a profession, from changes medieval scribes introduced as they copied ancient texts to the uneasy, commercially-constrained partnership between modern writers and their time-starved editors.Foremost among the book's strengths are the frequent before-and-after editing examples and the interviews with writers and editors. Numerous excerpts from F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby and Adam Thorpe's Ulverton reveal the working relationships between these authors and their editors. Interviews placed between chapters convey the essence of artistic evaluation and constructive criticism. The interviews with artists and filmmakers teach us much about editing strategies that apply across creative media. Concrete thinkers who equate editing with proofreading and expect lists of commonly misspelled words will be disappointed. The successful reader must understand and apply Susan Bell's lessons at a more abstract level.Susan Bell has much to say about the ongoing struggle between writers and editors for ownership and control. She advises assertiveness and restraint to both. Writers should look courageously at their work, cutting away the excess verbiage that smothers their very best ideas and language--and should defend these hard-won nuggets. Editors must challenge writers to see what does not work, then empower them to rework without undue editorial micromanaging. "The function of an editor is to be a reader," claims Gardner Botsford, as he introduces the last chapter. Susan Bell insists that "...an editor doesn't just read, he reads well, and reading well is a creative, powerful act." Her book attempts to place an editorial presence in the mind of each writer. This book is highly recommended to writers who want to improve their work and their work process. It is beneficial to writers of both fiction and nonfiction.

I expected something else so it's not the author's fault and I won't penalize her with a bad review. I'm not interested in the nuts and bolts of editing. I'm more interested in the craft of writing. You know; character, plot, setting, high stakes, high concept. This is about correcting others' usage. Not my cup of tea.

I have finished writing a novel (if one can ever be called finished) and am in the process of editing the attempt. I have read several (maybe 8) books on editing and while they were informative, instructive, and mostly correct, they failed to deliver the underlying, the core, of serious editing. This publication takes it to the same level, but in a different direction; an essential direction that should be instinctive but unfortunately is not to many writers. This book holds your hand and delivers the guts that go beyond usage and the proprietary. If you are a serious writer and hope to achieve what it's all about, buy this book. Personally, if I don't succeed as a writer, it certainly won't be this book's fault.
