All Over the Map: A Cartographic Odyssey, by Betsy Mason Greg Miller

Review

"This beautiful tome by WIRED alumni Betsy Mason and Greg Miller charts the fascinating history of cartography. The scores of maps in the book range from the whimsical (origins of meats supplied to Parisian butchers) to the political (North Dakota fracking sites) to the fantastical (Jerry Gretzinger’s imaginary world)."  –Wired"With an eye for splendor, Mason and Miller dredge up stories of the past through the medium of maps, often with something to say about the present. Their new book, All Over the Map: A Cartographic Odyssey, binds hundreds of evocative maps into one volume, stitched with approachable, illuminating prose."  –Laura Bliss, CityLab “Mason and Miller, who run the All over the Map blog, aren’t professional cartographers but journalists, and their stance as relative novices who love maps makes this book a wonder…A must for cartography collections and a wonderful addition to social science and art shelves.” –Library Journal “It'd be pretty difficult to review the breadth of maps in the book to give you a flavor even. Let’s just say Mason and Miller have got you covered whatever your map vice is. So whether you like the painstaking detail of beautiful topographic maps, the imagination of celestial charts, the analytical representation of statistical data or the fantasy of the map of Westeros or the Death Star then there’s plenty in this book to feast on.” –Kenneth Field, Cartonerd blog“Mapping the cosmos is just one of the topics addressed in this entertaining, colorful look at historical maps and the stories behind them. Space fans will revel in the tale surrounding a century’s worth of road atlases for Mars’ (non-existent) canals, There are also entries for the history of moon maps, the solar system maps that NASA’s Pioneer and Voyager missions provided for the aliens, and the fictional Death Star diagrams. But wait … there’s much, much more. Co-authors Betsy Mason and Greg Miller provide a cornucopia of cartography that spans subjects ranging from a street map for ancient Rome and a 15th-century guide to the parallels between medieval maps of Britain and contemporary charts of the Seven Kingdoms in “Game of Thrones.”–GeekWire "Science journalists Greg Miller and Betsy Mason took their obsession with maps—historical, geologic, science-y, even of other worlds—and translated that into one of the most beautiful and interesting compendiums of stories I've ever read. The book is filled with over 200 maps, some famous, like maps of the ocean floor, some obscure, like a geologic map of the moon, which is easily one of the visually craziest maps I've ever seen. I can't recommend it highly enough."  –Kishore Hari, Inquiring Minds podcast "One of the most beautiful and fascinating books I’ve ever seen." –Mary Eileen Williams, Feisty Side of Fifty podcast “Betsy Mason and Greg Miller have collected a simply gorgeous set of maps and not only shared the reason behind the making of the maps, but their history, what they got correct and what they missed, and I have now spent hours poring over the beautiful pictures of maps, ancient and recent, artistic, scientific, and both, from all corners of the world that are found in this stunning collection.” –BookNAround   "I just loved getting lost in these images and these stories. All Over the Map is such a treat for cartographers and fans of maps (like me) - it is simply unputdownable." –A Bookish Way of Life  “There is information in here that even surprised a map lover like me. Maps of cities, mountains, oceans, industry, farming, tourist flow, war destruction, wind, and planets - and that is just to touch on a few. The content of this book is really amazing! I can't think of anybody who would not enjoy this one.” .” –Wall-to-Wall Books“Every page of this giant tome of a book features a beautiful representation of a specific map accompanied by super interesting information about its history, origins and purpose.” –Ms. Nose in a Book  “It is a big, beautiful and utterly fascinating book featuring all kinds of unique maps that chart worlds both real and imagined.” –Kahakai Kitchen  “…a truly wonderful book. It’s fun and informative and beautiful and thought-provoking and educational. What are you waiting for?” –5 Minutes for Books“When this large book came into my life, I was struck immediately by one thing, and this kept going… and going… and going…This book is possibly the most beautiful book I have ever owned in my entire life.” –Literary Quicksand

All Over the Map by Betsy Mason and Greg Miller showed up today and it is an absolutely beautiful book. As you'd expect in a book about maps, the maps are visually stunning, interesting, and represent a wide variety of topics and styles. The printing is well done and everything is very high quality. What I love most about this book is that each map is accompanied by an interesting story. Sometimes the story has to do with the subject depicted in the map, sometimes it is about how the map was produced, and sometimes it has to do with the interesting history of a rare and important map itself. What this results in is an interesting collection of topics that changes unexpectedly with each turn of the page. As I scanned through the book the first time I was captivated by stories like "A Mesoamerican Survivor" (describing the close-calls that nearly destroyed a rare Aztec map) right next to wonderful images from a thoroughly modern view of Earth's weather in "World of Wind".The organization of the book - which avoids a 'history of maps' format contributes even further to the interesting juxtaposition of maps and narratives.I couldn't be more impressed with this book. I'll be giving this as a gift this holiday season and will certainly keep a copy on my shelf!

Don't let the title fool you. This beautifully designed, meticulously researched book isn’t just for the cartographically inclined. Whether you’re a history buff, a scientist, or someone who just loves lively and engaging storytelling, you'll find something fascinating on nearly every page of "All Over the Map."

This is an amazing book! Both my husband and 14 year old son are “mappy” and they have spent hours both together and individually talking about and reading this book. Their favorite stories/maps are the SF Shipwreck, Soviet Union communist map and the Death Star. The book is well organized and the layout, graphics and photos compliment the engrossing text perfectly. Highly recommend!!

This is an amazing book! The maps are beautiful, stunning, interesting, engaging and informative. National Geographic definitely has a winner with All Over the Map. My 15 year old son immediately found the map of the Death Star and was hooked after that. We have all picked it up and read about a topic that then led to a discussion about something scientific or historical. Great book to have out and available for both kids and adults alike. Definitely recommended!!

A fascinating assembly and discussion of so many different types of maps and the stories behind them. I have a whole new appreciation of the history of cartography. You might also consider buying a magnifying glass as there is so much detail you are going to want that analog zoom!

Very neat book. I got this for Christmas for my map-loving boyfriend (geography major, has had only mapping-related jobs) and he started reading it immediately. It has a great variety of maps, including fictional maps (Game of Thrones! Death Star plans!), but from what he said, it also includes some of the well-known "classic" maps. Good graphics, and enough of a story with each map that it feels more substantial than your typical coffee-table book full of pretty pictures.

Really like these. Bought a few to see how they looked and am buying more. Whoever boxed these needs retraining. I bought 8 and they were shipped in 2 different huge boxes with some other small items. Waste of resources.

Beautiful book for inquisitive readers.

I purchase this book before taking my family (2 adults, 3 children under age 12) to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. Within an hour of opening the book, I realized this was the perfect book for our trip. He does a great job in immersing you in the history of the island with interesting highlights and pictures, rather than some of the text heavy history you get in books like Lonely Planet. Both my wife and I read it while driving up, and were quickly pulled through stories about the history, culture, wildlife, food, and attractions of the entire area, which added context to our trip and made it so much more enjoyable. His reviews of the different areas to go were spot on, and allowed us to quickly narrow which areas of the island we wanted to go to, and what would be appropriate with kids and our interests. We then enhanced his trail reviews with the publicly available detailed trail maps handed out at the park and in Bar Harbor. He also did a great job reviewing the local restaurants, and we are thankful he did. Thurston's was one of our favorite stops, and we found it due to his his book.Topping it off, in a strange coincidence he was speaking at the local library while we were in town. He was extremely gracious and personable to everyone who came up to him, and you quickly realize the passion and real person behind the writing of this book. He really is a local!

I bought the 287-page Acadia book based on already having used James Kaiser's volumes for the Grand Canyon and Joshua Tree national parks. Like those, the Acadia book is excellent. Dozens of dazzling color photos in addition to fascinating information about the park and Bar Harbor and environs. Although the book focuses on the Park, it delivers a great deal of information about other things one can do in the area -- boat trips, restaurants, kayaking, shops, flights, museums, bike rentals -- you get the idea. A cautionary word: Although the author provides information about his favorite Acadia hikes, this is not a hiking book; for that I purchased the Falcon guide to Hiking Acadia National Park, also extraordinary.

James Kaiser has done a great job with this book (I have the 4th edition). A Mount Desert Island native, he hits all the high points of a trip to Acadia National Park and the surrounding areas. I took this book on my recent trip and found it to be a useful daily guide. I enjoyed reading it; it has a nice conversational style. Specifically, I was interested in hiking, biking the Carriage Roads, and driving the National Park as the focus of my trip. The book has great information and maps for these activities, including several hikes off the beaten path. The maps were greatly helpful to me; I took a picture of them on my smartphone in the morning and I was good for the day. If you're biking the Carriage Roads, you'll definitely want a good map. The book is printed on glossy paper that nicely brings out the brilliant photography between the text. There are several sections on history and ecology which I found interesting. As you walk around Bar Harbor (an easily walkable town), the guide highlights several places to stay and eat. It also covers the areas around Mt. Desert Island for day trips to other islands and discusses best transportation methods. Overall, the book is well worth the investment; I found it it to be a great planning tool for each day's activities. In summary, highly recommended.

We used the 4th edition of Acadia: The Complete Guide over a truly too short 6 day period in September 2017. This was our first time in Acadia and the book was exactly what we hoped and needed it to be, an overall guide not only to Acadia but to Mount Desert Island (MDI) in it's entirety. Although we lodged on Mount Desert Street in Bar Harbor proper we ventured out each day exploring the park and island reviewing the guide, sometimes before and sometimes after, what we had discovered. The book does not have every single hiking trail, or restaurant, lobster pound or available charter on MDI but it does have so much of each that you would be hard pressed to do what it does offer in a month let alone a week! As well, any hiker, biker, jogger or cross country skier will tell you part of the adventure is discovering on your own, and every trail is a different experience going out and coming back. Every body you talk to along the way will tell you their favorite hike, restaurant and lobster shack, and no two are the same, ever! The book is a guide, you have to explore and find what works for you.

Space 2.0: How Private Spaceflight, a Resurgent NASA, and International Partners are Creating a New Space Age

Review

“For spaceflight fanatics like me, now—the dawn of the Second Age of Space Exploration—is the most exciting time to be alive since the moon missions of the late 1960s and early '70s . . . In Space 2.0, ace science writer Rod Pyle—an advisor to NASA and the National Space Society—provides an engaging and expertly-informed explanation of how we got this far, along with a factual yet inspiring intro to our around-the-corner new adventures in space. Strap yourself in tight. It's a fascinating ride!” —Geoffrey Notkin, member of the board of governors for the National Space Society and Emmy Award-winning host of Meteorite Men and STEM Journals “Space 2.0 offers a grand overview of everything happening in space from JPL's robots to Elon Musk’s biggest ideas, and that is saying a lot! Pyle makes the complex technologies and intractable policy debates behind all this accessible to any reader without dumbing them down. It’s a great read for those who already excited about our new future in space and a must read for those who do not yet get it..” —Director of the University of Southern California’s Commercial Spaceflight Initiative and former NASA White House Liaison “Space 2.0 is just the right book at just the right time . . . This is a must-read for anyone interested in the future of space exploration and development in the 21st century, and gives excellent suggestions about how you can get involved in Space 2.0.” —Daniel J. Rasky, PhD, chief of the Space Portal Office and senior scientist/engineer at the NASA Ames Research Center “As Elon Musk celebrates more than 50 successful launches and a plethora of successful landings of his Falcon rockets and as Jeff Bezos achieves the ninth successful launch and landing of his New Shepard rocket, the space game is about to change. Rapidly. Your indispensable guide to the new space race is Rod Pyle's Space 2.0.” —Howard Bloom, author of The Lucifer Principle and Global Brain

I've known Rod Pyle for while now, and I knew he was a good writer, I didn't know he was such a comprehensive researcher. I have skimmed through this book for a quick read to provide a review. Based on my first pass, I can state without a doubt that this book is amazing, it is easy to read, provides some fantastic artwork, and historical photography too. What I like the most about this book are the factoids based on interviews from professionals and business owners in the aerospace industry and research details about the myriad of various areas which took me on a ride from private spaceflight, through NASA (some of which I was already familiar) and the new entrepreneurial disrupters of the present and a view into what the future of spaceflight might see. What was also insightful was the historical significance and context which gave me a complete picture. Now that I've skimmed through I'm ready for a slow read to take it all in with hot tea and relax and fully absorb all the deep work Rod Pyle put into Space 2.0. What is really wonderful is how well written this book is, which is refreshing. Don't miss this book as it is great to read but it also is a great desktop reference for spaceflight. If you have teens that are interested in aerospace this is a fantastic book for an overall deep dive into spaceflight, many questions can be answered by reading this book and some that have never been asked.

I received this book specifically to write a review. That said, I try to be honest and open in all my reviews.(Please see the enclosed pictures.)This is a beautifully illustrated book, and it is sturdy too. I have carried it around with me in my backpack during three weeks of intercontinental travels, and the binding has held up well. The book tells the story of how humans got into space and covers the historical aspects of Space 1.0 (up through the last Space Shuttle mission). The book proposes all the reasons that it is both feasible and desirable for a Space 2.0 and talks through both governmental and private current space ventures. The book describes in logical and well provenanced terms what the rationale for getting into and staying in space are from protection of the Earth through gaining resources through exquisite manufacturing and ultimately as a way of exploring the unknown.Everywhere in the book there are absolutely gorgeous full four color pictures. This book is fun to read as well as informative. (Imagine my surprise and delight when the passenger next to me took the book to read when I dozed off on my flight. How many books does that happen to?)I could not be happier with either the presentation or the content.Well done Rod Pyle!

If you’re not a fan of aeronautics and space flight, you may not know that one of the most exciting trends in space right now is the explosion of private space ventures. Internet billionaires like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos have launched successful ventures that are now some of the most advanced systems in the world for launching cargo into space. If everything goes right, a few months from now as I write, SpaceX will be the first private company to launch astronauts into space. This colorful, profusely illustrated book is an introduction to the world of commercial space flight aimed at those who may not have much knowledge of the world of space flight- students looking at a possible career in the new world of commercial space, investors looking for new areas to put money into, and just those with a curiousity about the world. As such, it does a good job, and conveys the excitement of the field and the enthusiasm of its participants and promoters. Those who are already enthusiastically following the world of space flight won’t find anything new here, but they may find this book useful in conveying the excitement to others.

Space 2.0 is a detailed account of everything "new" about "new space" from an author with a very long pedigree in documenting the next frontier. If you want to know more about the companies, programs and people that are shaping the future in unexpected ways this is your book. Pyle goes beyond the vague visions of the space billionaires and talks with the project managers, the engineers, the scientists about the nuts and bolts of fulfilling those visions with amazing hardware. Most unexpected was the plethora of color glorious photos, illustrations and charts that enliven the text.I've spent a career researching, writing on and advocating for a commercial space revolution. I make a point to literally read EVERYTHING that comes out on the topic. From that perspective, I strongly recommend Space 2.0 to any space aficionado or curious bystander who has begun to notice that space is where the action is moving. 15 chapters: 20-30 pages each (short & sweet writing). "Paired pages", the Murach trademark (left page: explanation / right page: examples, brief descriptions, key points). Fast and novice-friendly read. Easily finish the book in a week (two chapters a day). Two weeks if you take your time (one chapter a day).Beginners: Recommend one chapter a day, take your time. Familiarize yourself with the syntax and tools. Key point: fully grasp the fundamental concepts.Intermediate: Good, fast refresher (2+ chapters a day). Experienced with HTML but new to CSS and/or XHTML.Advanced: This book will probably bore you. If you're already web development savvy and looking to beef up your skills, this book is not for you.My tip: The book recommends using Notepad++ for Windows users. I suggest using Microsoft's Visual Web Developer Express as well (both are free). Reasons being: FORMAT DOCUMENT function: keep your code clean, structured, and easier to examine. REAL-TIME VALIDATION: instead of validating through W3C website after coding to find errors. Easy introduction to using an IDE while learning coding at the same time. ** note: you'll get a warning using W3C's website validation because VWD encodes the file in UTF-8 with BOM, you can open the file in Notepad++ when your finished and convert it to UTF-8 without BOM to pass the W3C validation. After completion: I highly recommend Murach's Javascript and DOM Scripting.

Excellent book in paper copy, has lots of examples of coding, but I am not a fan of any murach's ebooks because you have to have their special book reader to read it. If a person is writing a book about building websites, and other electronic media, I would expect them to be able to create a proper ebook as well.

This practically is the cadillac of HTML books. I have had other books teaching HTML, but this one does the job great. Pick this up to start learning HTML

This book takes you through some history and then step by step with examples. There are also downloadable samples available so hands-on learning can take place.

I love Murach books! Their paired-pages format is the best. Of course, the content is great too. The books have more full programs and great code than I have gotten in any other book.

Yes, it is a great book to learn all HTML and CSS. Very easy to understand and at a great price.

This book is hard to follow and does not have a glossary or a good index. The examples are poorly described and difficult to follow.

Murach's HTML, XHTML, and CSS is an excellent introductory book for beginner programmers, and somewhat useful as a remedial work for intermediate ones like me.PROS---------------+ Starts with the basics and explains them well+ Works systematically to develop skills+ Covers all of the major stuff you need for building a web-site+ Teaches good practices+ Well-organizedCONS---------------- Never moves to the intermediate level; I couldn't do more than just refresh basic skills (some of which were pretty rusty)- I was hoping for more reference tables and the like--this is good for reading one time, but not for re-visitingSUMMARY----------------This book is best read by beginners. I wish I would have had it when I was starting out. Intermediate and advanced programmers ought to look elsewhere. This series seems to have a lot of other computer programming books for more advanced work. Hopefully, they are as well-written as this one.
