Besides the beautiful illustrations in the new Pat Sloan book, I love her clear directions. There is a variety ofprojects just waiting for me to start...my personal favorite is "Farmer's Market." While I try to borrow quiltingbooks from friends, I especially wanted this one for my personal library...so happy to have it!

Love all of Pat Sloan's books. Her instructions are always clear and precise. It's fun learning a new quilting technique at my own pace.

New to Appliqué... this book saved me a lot of heart ache... tips I didn't get in a class nor on You Tube. Well written & when finish project I'm on will be delighted to use some of her patterns.

This is my first attempt at applique so I was looking for some direction. This book answers a lot of my questions. Well written, great illustrations, and easy to follow. The author is truly a teacher.

This is a very excellent book for those who wish to learn to machine applique. I would truly buy it again.

Pat's applique method leaves soft instead of stiff applique for a much more usable finished product (and saves fusible interfacing!)

Weak in every sense of the word. Having been born in Cairo and lived in the US most of my life I can tell you that the advice in this book is close to useless. The sight seeing information is thin at best and several pieces of info are just flat out wrong. The travel guide at the end is laughable. For example the vocabulary at the end in “common phrases” is very technical and in no way reflects language you would hear the average person using. Use this guide and prepare to be laughed at.

I bought this and the RoughGuide to Egypt. Both great books for our trip (just returned 11 Feb 2017). We left the Rough Guide at the hotel but took the Top 10 guide with us. great quick FYI's and pics. We chose not to hire a guide or take a tour. This book assisted us.

Not the greatest but gives you ideas. Interesting a few things in some top 10 list are 'skip it' in Lonely Planet!

These are my favorite travel books. I wish the map included Giza too, though

I'm a big fan of the DK Top 10 series for books. Since they have a relatively narrow focus, it can be beneficial if you've got a small period of time in a small space. However, Cairo and the rest of Egypt is deserving of a large book since there's lots to see.It's not to say that this book is bad: It'll give you the top 10 things to see in Cairo, Luxor, Aswan and Abu Simbel - but odds are you're going to see them anyway if you're doing a packaged tour.I like this book, but I can't really recommend it. You're better off buying the Lonely Planet Discover Egypt (Full Color Country Travel Guide) for a little bit more.

I have a lot f Eyewitness travel guides but this was my first "Top 10" book. I definitely prefer other Eyewitness travel guides since I found these "Top 10" guides lack a lot of important information. I still recommend it for those who will travel just a few days to Cairo

Not knowing east-west-north-south about Botswana, the Guide is good for this first timer to Africa safari... especially as a reference source along the way. Our safari operator set up the camps, days, a long time ago. So, comparing the where to stay and how to get there was not meaningful to me. Each region has its own uniqueness. Good to compare what I was seeing myself for the first time to what was written.

This seems like a book for someone that wants to take a self guided safari. Great for that, but not necessary if you are just going on safari with a tour group.

This is a good preparatory book for going on safari in Botswana. I think that the author spends far too much time going over the dangers of safari, but for background on the areas we planned to visit, it was useful.

I had difficulty finding a guide for Botswana and this one addressed the areas I will be visiting. It was very good with health information and did provide a general overview of the information needed before visiting this area in Africa. It is not as good as a Fodor's guide but met my needs. I would recommend this guide to anyone planning a trip to Botswana. I was disappointed that the camps I am staying at were not included in this guide.

This book can be read separately from Velikovsky's other famous and controversial works like Worlds in Collision, Ages in Chaos or Peoples of the Sea as it is not dependent on the chronological sequence of the others. The reign of Akhnaton is considered one of the most interesting periods in the history of ancient Egypt and has inspired many books, but this work by Velikovsky still remains the most fascinating. As far as we know, the religious reform of Akhnaton was abolished, his line died out and his city was abandoned. Velikovsky attempts to elucidate the end of this king, the fate of his two young successors Smenkhare and Tutankhamen, the decline of the kingdom and the fate of Thebes, at the hand of the legends that came down to us from the Greeks. Although his work is controversial, in this book he makes a very strong case for the origin of the Oedipus myth being the true history of Akhnaton and his family. The mysterious relationships, the enigmatic sequence of events and the strange finds in the graves are no longer secret and obscure when illuminated by the legend. The known history in fact ties in perfectly with the details of the legend. Furthermore, the Oedipus legend does not fall into the category of myths that reflect events in nature, because its human character is too obvious. Whatever you think of Velikovsky's alternative history, this book is beautifully written, highly engaging and never less than fascinating in its scope and detail. He even identifies Antigone as Meritaten, the half-sister and wife of Smenkhare, partly based on a beautiful poem inscribed in gold foil that was found under the feet of a mummy in an undisturbed tomb. This moving prayer or word of parting ends with the lines: "Give me thy hands that hold thy soul/I shall embrace and live by it/Call me by name again, again, forever/And never will it sound without response." The text is illumined with 40 black & white plates, including limestone heads of Nefertete and Meritaten, gold coffins and masks of Tutankhamen, the sphinx and the Memmon colossi. "Oedipus and Akhnaton" is a must for those interested in ancient Egypt, in alternative history or in the origin of ancient myths and legends.

I purchased this book while I was waiting for Ages in Chaos to arrive. We never stop learning and that's what I like about Velikovsky. He presents things that you may not know. Here, he makes a case for Akhnaton being the mythological Oedipus. Not exactly the thread I was looking for (see Worlds in Collision) but interesting enough.

It is a sad and tragic situation when scholarship overshadows student-ship. The scholar is compelled by convention and tradition to adhere to what other scholars have said and written, always assuming that what is written cannot be true if it doesn't follow the classic (Greek)/Romantic (Roman) History model. That is narrow and restrictive. The true student recognizes and learns from the whole world and universe, both past and present.

I am both a fan and critic of Velikovsky. His ideas on the electric universe and catastrophism are excellent. On the other hand, his ideas on revised chronology are hard to swallow, as are those of his "disciples." So I did not know what to expect, but the Egyptology crowd are not so nice or credible themselves at time and I always seek out alternative viewpoints. So I held my breath and bought this at Amazon.I was amazed and astonished. I do not fully subscribe to all is ideas on this but I do think he has hit upon something substantial. Greeks were, in my mind, great borrowers of other cultures, themselves mixing with others as they came down into Greece from the north and east. Velikovsky makes many astute detailed observations I have never heard before but being a well read student of Egyptology, I recognized it all as having much validity. Egyptologists tend to ignore that they can not explain and the Amarna period is not without may challenges. Recent DNA tests and x-rays and the like have helped to solve mysteries that would change some of V's ideas, but not enough to refute his basic premise, that the "myth" of Oedipus is largely based on the life of Akhenaten and his court and family.This was published in 1960 and yet, it is still relevant and useful today, some 50 years later. If you have an interest in the Amarna period, you simply can not afford to ignore this book. Even if you don't agree that much with V, you will get a new perspective on things. That's what learning is for, right?

The legends and history that make up these incredible stories are brought together magisterially by Velikovsky. They are woven together and narrated in great storytelling that make this a very enjoyable read whether or not these characters have fascinated you before. The hardcover edition has many photographs.

There is so much in this book which rings true as to a possible comparative history. The horrible detail of Oedipus putting out his own eyes may have a strange parallel to Akhnaton supposedly causing his father's name to be chiseled off some inscriptions, and also that the priests under King Ay caused the name of Akhnaton to be chiseled off of most of their occurrences in Egypt. In a way, Akhnaton's image was put out from anyone's eyes. Also, in the later time of pharaohs Ramses II and Seti I, chronological hieroglyphs of the Eighteenth dynasty in Egypt go from Amenhotep III directly to Horemheb, omitting the pharaohs Akhnaton and Tutankhaton/Tutankhamen. Perhaps SOMETHING happened during this historical time more horrible than simply Akhnatons' changing the main God from Amun to the Aton and King Tut's priests changing the religion back to that of worshipping Amun.

Book was a little more dated than anticipated. Received promptly and on schedule per shipping time given. Was a gift for my husband, but he didn't really find the book interesting.

Velikovsky,who was truly an "original" the like of which only passes this way once, proves to the reader that the ancient Greek myth of Oedipus was actually based on the true life story of Akhnaton ,the pharoah who is known as the first monotheist. The story is strange evocative and poignant. I think there should be a Velikovsy revival !
