Think X-Men meet film noire. Larry Correia has created a parallel universe taking place in the post WWI era that reads like a black and white serial we used to see at the movies. You can almost see the screen wipes and closing irises as each chapter comes to an end. "Actives", characters with a magical ability, like X-Men, constitute a small minority of the population of the world and for the purposes of this story are primarily divided into good (American and European) and bad (Japanese) with a few exceptions. The bad guys want to take control of the planet by exploding a doomsday device that will virtually destroy the US and bring the rest of the world to its collective knees. Lighter than air flying machines are the transports and military air weapons of choice. There is action aplenty and interesting, fun characters some better than good and some evil incarnate. Fight scenes are terrific and pull no punches, pun intended, as bodies at times are torn or blown apart causing fountains of blood to coat the combatants. There are zombies, ninjas, wizards, real historical figures and even a few "Normals" thrown into the mix. Spoiler alert, don't be too disappointed if your favorite character is mortally wounded or even killed as there are ways to bring them back.The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is that it reads like a graphic novel. The dialogue is stilted and compares to that of the Star Wars films. This is not a book that requires any deep thinking on the part of the reader nor will you be rolling the plot around in your mind once you have finished the book. It is mind candy, a guilty pleasure you can enjoy for what it is and escape the reality of life. If that is what you are looking for and enjoy then I highly recommend this book.

I like reading and books and bookstores and I like to browse and just look at the covers. I read a lot so I try to try new books and authors I haven't read before. I saw Monster Hunters and Hard Magic on the shelves and read the backs and had this snobbish kind of reaction to them. "Oh its pulp. Just a Garret Files rip-off. Move on" I'm really sorry. I saw a recommendation on maybe IO9.com and decided to give him a try and got Monster Hunters International. I loved it. I read the books in that series and now I'm on the Grimnoir books and ripping through those and telling everyone I can about them. Nobody is ever going to say things like, "this is a groundbreaking classic, changed the genre for all time!" but it doesn't stop them from being awesome. I compare them to Clive Cussler's early Dirk Pitt books. The heroes are good people trying to do the right thing because its the right thing to do. You care about what's going on in the story and I find myself rushing to see how it's going to end. I've never gotten to the end of one of Corriea's books and felt like it's just a come-along to the next book. My parents introduced me to Clive Cussler. It was in my teenage years and it was the first time that I had something to connect with my parents and realize that my parents had interests outside of me and my brother. It was a good time in my life. These stories bring me back there. Really, doesn't good literature make the reader form those relations to their own lives?Anyway, Larry Correia, I apologize for sticking my nose up in the air. Thank you for writing these great books. Give them a try people.

Hard Magic is Larry Correia's third novel and already he is writing better than authors who have been on the scene for years. Having read both Monster Hunter novels I was well aware of Correia's skill going into Hard Magic but I never expected a masterpiece of this caliber. Reviews have been going around for some time now, Baen published an electronic-Advanced Read Copy a couple months ago and the reviews have been flattering. Some critics had even stated that this is Correia's best book yet. Having finished the novel I can honestly say that such praise is well deserved.Hard Magic can be summed up as epic-urban fantasy-steampunk-noir-detective thriller-alternative historical-fiction. Correia juggles so many genres and "Big Ideas" that a lesser author would fumble in an instant and mangle into some Frankenstein monster of failed literature. Not only does Correia manage to keep the story uncluttered but he does it with some serious style. The Monster Hunter novels are packed with hardcore action, huge set pieces ,deep characters, and involving plots and yet Hard Magic is able to transcend them and create a whole new level of awesome.First, the universe Correia has created. Not only does Hard Magic feature a fully functioning, well planned out system of magic but it also gives explanation behind the appearance of this magic. The magical abilities of "Actives" are very cool but at the same time they are explained. There are rules and dangers that come with each form of magic, and the magics themselves are firmly grounded in the universe they inhabit. Correia's alternative version of the 1930's is also a very cool world on its own, and quotes by notable historical figures involving the emergence and use of magic only help to flesh it out. Oh and for any of you steampunk fans out there I should mention there are some serious awesome zeppelins.Next, the characters. Some critics are bound to draw similarities between Jake Sullivan, the main protagonist of Hard Magic, and Owen Pitt the lead of Monster Hunter. These similarities are fewer than some might imagine. Both are very tough, duty bound characters but I actually found myself liking Jake Sullivan a good bit more. Sullivan is a much darker character than Pitt. He is a damaged man with a tragic past. At the same time he is also very intelligent, having discovered things about magic that other characters within the novel never would have guessed. Sullivan also has some of the coolest powers of any magic "Active." The other notable character here is Faye, a young girl who can teleport and suffers some tragedy of her own. I rarely enjoy female characters written by male authors but to me Faye rings true. Her peppy attitude is a wonderful foil to the more solemn Sullivan and she always seems believable. There are some other colorful characters as well as a very well written villain but it's best for the reader to meet them on their own.And now for the action. If you have ever wanted to read about a teleporting ninja battle being carried on across a super zeppelin in the midst of a pirate attack while samurai and zombies engage magical super heroes trying to prevent a super weapon from being activated this is the book for you. The fight scenes in Hard Magic are top notch, white knuckle, block buster, thrill rides that will satisfy even the biggest adrenaline junkies. Not only are these fights brutal and explosive but they are also rather intelligent. It can't be easy to write a multi-layered battle featuring combatants with different magical skills but Correia weaves seamless fight scenes that couldn't possibly be choreographed any better. The last 50 pages make for one of the most epic final confrontations I have ever read. Be warned.Lastly the plot. With enough action and explosions to trump a Michael Bay film and plenty of original ideas whirling around it would almost be forgivable for the plot to suffer. This, fortunately, is not the case in the least. From the beginning to the end Hard Magic features perfect pacing. There are completely unexpected twists, betrayals, surprises, intrigue, build up, and a very satisfying conclusion. The Monster Hunter novels have great plots as well as a very successful over arcing story but Hard Magic achieves far more. My only concern is that it will be nigh impossible for Correia to out-do himself when Spellbound, Book II of the Grimnoir Chronicles comes out this fall.Overall if you are looking for a book to rock your world, make you do some fist pumps, and demand a sequel then buy this book. The only regret I have is that I cannot give Hard Magic a rating higher than 5 measly stars. It deserves much more.

The Salisburys provide a complete account of that feat-the first book in 40 years to do so-and, perhaps, introduce readers to two of the most crucial and courageous characters in this drama, Leonhard Seppala and his peerless lead dog, Togo. The authors supply a constant flow of interesting facts about Nome, the introduction of Siberian Huskies to Alaska, the beginnings of the Alaska airline industry, and why air delivery of the serum was discounted as an option. The heart of the book, however, is the run itself. I did not know the history or reason for the Iditarod race. All I knew was it was an arduous race with sled dogs that takes place in Alaska each year. If you love stories of adventure and survival, this history ranks with the best of the genre. It outlines the urgency to get Diphtheria antitoxin to Nome, Alaska in 1925 during one of the worst cold spells of the winter. Dog teams were the only viable method of delivering the serum to Nome. As I read the book to learn about the Iditarod race, I would like to outline some of the differences between the 1925 event and the modern day race.In 1925 the mail was delivered to Nome by dog sled. At that time as today, Nome was completely isolated from the other towns in Alaska during the winter months as there are no roads, In summer it is reached by ship, but during the winter the only way to get there is by dog sled. It's a long trip. The 1925 event utilized numerous dog teams that relayed the serum to Nome much like the Pony Express. There were around 20 men each with their own dog team involved in the effort. Some teams carried the serum as little as 18 miles while the most arduous run was 91 miles done by the renowned musher, Leanard Seppala with his lead dog Togo which he had raised from a puppy. The serum finally arrived in Nome carried by Gunnar Kaasen, with lead dog Balto who subsequently received much notoriety. There is even a bronze statue of Balto in NYC's Central Park honoring his heroism. However, every dog team deserves credit for their part in this 674 mile race against time which took 5 and 1/2 days. Dog teams are very dependent on the lead dog and not just any member of the dog team can take the place of lead dog. Just like with humans, there are leaders, and there are followers. The 1925 event took place in extremely cold and harsh conditions. Even with many dog teams and men, it required courage, stamina and knowhow. The dogs teams of 1925 were mostly Malamutes and Siberian Huskies with thick double coats well suited to the extreme conditions. These dogs can be comfortable in 50 below zero conditions. Much of this is in contrast to the modern day Iditarod race.The modern day Iditarod was established in 1973 to commemorate the 1925 run. What is different is that the modern race is farther, around 1,000 miles in length; and single dog teams limited to no more than 16 dog run the entire distance with a single musher. The modern dogs are different in that they are bred for speed and are not as well suited to the cold as the classic Alaskan dogs. Nevertheless they run the race faster albeit sometimes with jackets on their backs, and boots on their feet. The modern race has mandatory check points, and rest stops with food delivered to the dogs by airplane. Veterinarians are stationed at each check point and check the health and condition of the dogs. Any dogs which are sick or injured are ferried back by Bush Pilots to receive proper veterinary care and then loving friendship from the inmates of the state prison. While dogs can be dropped from the team by the musher or at the insistence of a veterinarian, no fresh dogs may be added. There is just a single musher who must complete the race by him or herself with their own team. The trail of the modern race is well marked. I'm not sure that it was in 1925 I believe it was more up to the dogs to stay on the path. In any case it is the lead dog that has a great ability to sense the suitability of the trail.The take away from both events is man's special relationship with dogs and their loyalty to man. The dogs love to run, and the shared of weight they pull is not great for each individual dog. Nevertheless it takes great stamina to win or even complete the race. About half of the modern competitors give up on the race before they reach Nome. It's not possible to win the race by abusing the dogs. A good musher has to know their limits and encourage the dogs to perform their best. To win the dogs by necessity need adequate rest and proper nutrition. The musher too, must get enough sleep, although at times the musher can catch a "cat nap" on the sled as the hearty dogs pull on. The winning dog team seems to know that they are in the lead and they are reluctant to give it up to another team. In reality all the dog teams cover the ground at about the same speed. It is the craftiness, good judgment, and endurance of the musher that brings home the big prize. It's not like a short horse race were the animal is spurred up to full speed. The dogs do it because they love running on the trail, and they love the humans who support them. The dogs carry on for not only hours, but days at the same pace of between 7 and 10 MPH.I found this book to be a great read, as it increased my knowledge of dogs' special abilities and their relationships with the humans who breed and care for them. The book brought tears to my eyes and a stuffy nose on many occasions. What more can I say?

I really liked this book. I've always had a fascination with Alaska and it only increased after I read James Michener's book 'Alaska'. With the knowledge I gained while reading his book I was familiar with names, places and incidents mentioned in Gay Salisbury's book.But I mean, what's not to love about a story of a dogs, their masters, and a race against time and the elements to stop an epidemic that is quickly consuming the children of Nome Alaska? This book will make your heart beat faster. You will find yourself catching your breathe as these brave men encounter situations that would stop the hardiest of individuals.I was over halfway through the book one night when I started reading thinking that I'd doze off. This was at 11 PM. When I happened to glance at the clock next it read 5:30 AM. I was a mess the rest of the day...LOL. But I had to finish it that day. I couldn't put it down. I loved at the end after the story there was more personal information concerning those specific individuals involved in the heroic endeavor.If you like dogs and are even remotely intrigued by Alaska I encourage you to read this book. I certainly wasn't disappointed.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It's a riveting story of the famous diphtheria serum relay via dogsled from Nenana to Nome, Alaska, in 1925. While the book is nonfiction and a very well-researched historical account, it had me hooked like a good novel. The details about the mushers (dogsled drivers), dogs, weather conditions, and the situation in Nome were incredible. Reading the book gives you a little insight into life in the frontier days of Alaska. While the focus of the book was obviously the situation in 1925 Nome and the relief effort, the author provides some fascinating detail of the earlier Gold Rush days and what the towns of Alaska were like in the late 1800s through early 1900s. The book is pretty "safe" for readers of all ages, with the only "mature" content being a very brief mention (maybe a paragraph) about a famous prostitute in the Gold Rush days. I would feel comfortable letting my two pre-teens read this book. The historical action and information are presented in a very engaging way, and as I finished every page I couldn't wait to read what happened next.

One of the best books I've purchased. Not only do the authors do a great job with capturing the feel of the race to Nome, but also you can really tell that they did their research. The pictures that they have in the center of the book are beautiful, and would be worth the price of the book alone.Granted, there are some filler chapters as they talk about the native style of life and how mukluks etc are made, but these parts are short enough that interest is not lost and they don't interrupt the flow of the narrative either.I've purchased this book three times now: Once for myself and twice as a gift. This is an excellent book for anyone who has an interest in history, medicine, dogs and the story behind the fiction

This book tells the apocryphal story of how, in 1924, 20 mushers and their dogs braved impossible elements to carry diptheria serum to Nome, Alaska and save the population of Nome from an epidemic. Believed to be the precursor of the now famous Iditarod dogsled race. Although the book is not long, it reads long one due to its extraordinary detail. I just spent two weeks in Alaska. But for that, I probably would not have gotten thru the book as my curiosity would not have been available to save my impatience! As it is, it was a slow, plodding read. Gives the feeling the author struggled to make a book out of a short story, adding lengthy passages on the clothing neded to survive an Alaska winter and on the future of commercial flight in Alaska. That said, much of the detail was necessary in order to paint an accurate picture of the degree of difficulty in the rescue effort. Just be prepared to learn more about some things than you cared to learn.

This book has been very useful in helping me deal with irrational verbal attacks by an old associate when I went out on a limb to respond to his request for help. His story became progressively inconsistent and, as I tried gently to help him work through it, I was eventually assailed, twice, over the phone. Although this took me by surprise and was painful, this is the second time that the person has ‘come after me’ for no apparent reason.By chance I saw an article in Psychology Today by the book’s author, Bill Eddy. The article seemed to capture many characteristics of my quasi-friend and his behavior, so I bought the book.The rationale is simple and elegant. The author is both a mediation attorney, and psychotherapist. About half his mediation cases involve a disputant with one of 5 major types of personality disorders identified by mental health professionals in the DSM-5 [sociopath, psychopath, narcissist etc]. According to the NIH these individuals constitute about 10% of the US population.Of these types, those who cause people distress through their words or actions, tend to take advantage of people in characteristic ways. The author calls them High-Conflict Personalities (HCPs: though not all people with these disorders cause conflict).When one finds oneself sucked into a dysfunctional and painful situation with an HCP, certainly one approach is to hire a counselor. In my view, it is best to be equipped with some skills, even if simple ones, to detect, and handle, the situation before seeking professional help. The HCP concept meets that need. It is not intended as a diagnostic system. It is more like a street map telling you which parts of a foreign city to avoid if you value your health.The book provides early warning clues. Is the person doing something that 90% of the people would not do? [In my case, yes he was]. And, is the person saying something that 90% of the people would not say? [In my case, yes]. Finally, how does one feel after engaging the person? [I felt disconcerted, betrayed, abused, and victimized]. I tend to be too trusting and wanting to help. Thus, I was an easy target.Of course, given human psychological diversity, the details of how HCPs disrupt relationships will vary. But, in the depth of the book I found many characteristics that fit the person causing me problems. He is charming and fast-talking, with big plans that lacked concrete or logical details (that he wouldn’t discuss). He lies or misrepresents the facts, doesn’t take responsibility for his circumstances, never apologizes, and does not attempt to resolve misunderstandings. I’ve always known that he had a volatile reaction to being questioned, and that he always escalated a disagreement rather than trying to find a common solution. Thus, I have always walked on eggshells around this guy. All these traits are common among certain HCPs.For me, the official psychological designation didn’t really matter. What mattered was being able to deal with the person. Initially, I reacted with anger and opposition, as anyone would, but that’s not Eddy’s recommendation. Better to set clear boundaries, or use an excuse for a graceful way of backing out. I am currently working on that and, as of now, communication between this person and me has ceased. That saddens me because the guy can be fascinating [as long as I don’t ask questions].In sum, I found Eddy’s book to be very helpful. Given that HCPs constitute a significant fraction of the people we meet, its recommendations are good to keep in mind before untoward situations develop. What layperson can recall the details of the DSM-5 regarding the diversity of people who effortlessly engage conflict? Eddy’s book is a good first-hand rubric for avoiding trouble. I recommend it.

The title is a little HISTRIONIC but this is an incredibly helpful book for identifying and managing five different kinds of high-conflict people. The approaches feel a bit corporate, with trademarked acronyms for each strategy, but I was sold after I found myself reading through the chapters, recognizing the people, and thinking, "Dang, I wish I'd said that. Dang, I wish I'd done that." If you're highly empathetic and/or you have codependent tendencies and find it really hard not to fall right into cheerleader/champion/sympathizer mode with someone new who tugs at your heartstrings, this book offers great stop-drop-and-roll advice that you can follow repeatedly until it becomes instinctual. Loaded with sentences you can actually say in a wide variety of contexts. Love Eddy's statistical approach to adjusting the reader's expectations. No, you can't get along with everybody. You need to expect problems with about one in ten people. Here's how to manage it.

Terrific book, wish I had read it 10 years ago. I just left a job where a person with both narcissistic personality disorder and border line personality disorder spends her days tearing down excellent people to boost her mediocre self. Six months of that, daily, including on weekends as she never stops emailing, and gets offended when her emails are not answered in 5 minutes! I found this book and finally understood what she was doing, and that she could not be helped at work, the best thing was to leave, so I did. Thankfully, the job market is hot and I got another job within days, but how sad that one very ill individual is destroying the workplace for so many people. I have recommended this book to all of those who remain there, and have already received two emails from people thanking me for giving them a game plan on how to deal with this sick individual. Thank you Bill Eddy for your insights, they are valuable to all in the workplace.

Self-awareness is the key to handling high-conflict people, because although THEY probably won't change, YOU can learn to control how you react to them, to stop them from ruining your life. Bill's easy to understand methods have worked for me, and I highly recommend this book.It is clearly written without jargon, giving helpful examples of what to say or not to say when confronted by High Conflict People.

I will be buying another copy for my 20 year old son in hopes to help enlighten him as he takes off on his own life path.

As always, a book full of delicious recipes, with ingredients I already have in my pantry, beautiful photography, and down home country charm. The Beekman Boys always do a wonderful job of sharing their lives with all of us, and their delicious food. And a special shout-out to Rose Marie Trapani, a wonderdul cook whose recipes are shared in this book! Now it's time to get cookin'!

I've read, and enjoyed, historical romance before. But, this is the first one I've encountered based on the Puritan way of life. I normally go for a good mystery or a crime drama with offbeat humor. Lately I've been indulging in young-adult paranormal. I'm also a big sic-fi fan and I throw in the occasional classic now and then. So, it would stand to reason that I might hold a small fear of this book turning out to be dull. I mean, come on... Puritans. How can that be engaging and romantic?But, engaging and romantic it is. The book opens with a heart-wrenching scene that grabs the reader and the plot never lets go. You're immediately thrust into the lives of the main characters, John and Elizabeth, with a special peek into their hearts. Fear, worry, doubt and second-guessing. These topics of romance are always in season, Puritan or not. But, the Puritan part of the story is essential. It's the love of God that causes the steadfastness of conviction that leads to much of the story. It's an imbedded part of who the characters are and what makes them tick. But, you don't have to be religious or a believer to fully fall in love with the Puritan's of The Preacher's Bride and be wringing your hands or cheering with fulfilled hope depending on the page.This novel is based on the real lives of John and Elizabeth Bunyan. Writer's license is taken with the romance of the couple, as well as creating personalities of the townspeople, while keeping most historical moments intact. John Bunyan wrote Pilgrim's Progress. A book I've never read, but I'm going to now.So grab this one. Don't let it pass you by because you think it's all about religion. It's about people. Their hopes, dreams, fears and struggles. It's an awesome, intriguing page-turner for anyone regardless of your usual reading genre.

The Preacher’s Bride by Jody Hedlund explores a part of history I knew hardly anything about — the latter days of the rule of Oliver Cromwell following the English Civil War. Okay, I should know about Puritans, right? That subject is introduced in every Kindergarten classroom in America. They came to the New World for religious freedom, but what did religious intolerance and persecution in England really look like? Through the eyes of Elizabeth Whitbread and John Costin, the reader gets a good look at what it means to live according to God’s will, not man’s dictates.The characters of John Costin and Elizabeth Whitbread were inspired by the life of John Bunyan, author of The Pilgrim’s Progress. Quite a bit is known about John, but only a glimpse of Elizabeth’s life can be gleaned from the historical record. Hedlund does a great job of creating a Puritan maiden who dedicates her life to serving God and man. Elizabeth views herself as plain and inconsequential. Young and illiterate, she nevertheless has a strong faith and character. John is newly widowed following his wife Mary’s death from childbed fever. Lost in grief and fearing to love again, he immerses himself in God’s calling — to preach the Gospel to the poor and lowly. An unlicensed preacher, he is the target of royalist supporters. As she takes on the role of housekeeper for John, Elizabeth becomes a target as well. Their relationship deepens, but is hindered by the desires of others in the congregation, rumors, threats and betrayal.The Preacher’s Bride has interesting characters in John, Elizabeth, John’s blind daughter Mary, the wet nurse, Lucy and other assorted members of Elizabeth’s family and the Puritan congregation. It is a large cast, but not overwhelming. All play a integral part in the development of the story. Hedlund does a great job of making mid-1600s England vivid in the reader’s mind — the hardness of life, the intolerance of the political system and the harshness of the justice system. As to themes, a couple of things stood out for me — the tension/balance between God’s call and family life and the idea that love of man and God is somehow earned by doing right. Elizabeth is faithful and believes in God’s provision and plan, yet still thinks that her works should somehow weigh in her favor with God. Both Elizabeth and John have to evaluate their part in God’s work and its role in their marriage.The Preacher’s Bride is one of Hedlund’s older novels, but it is well-written and researched. More history with a good dose of romance, it is a book I can recommend.Recommended.Audience: older teens to adults.

This book was exactly what I needed to read for understanding how to handle the greatest of life’s challenges. Feeling weighed down by persecution for his calling in life, John faced many relatable problems to such extremes, and still he remained strong in his faith. Elizabeth too was faithful in serving God no matter the cost, and that cost meant putting her life at risk many times. I want to read John’s real life work of literature to see first hand how this amazing man and woman faced unimaginable pain and struggle for years and yet remained steadfast and victorious. I also want to see more about how God’s love can sustain the downtrodden and why a profound love like theirs has stood the test of time.

The Preacher's Bride by Jody Hedlund -- I loved this story! It contains historical insights into the lives of the people of this time. I contains love, villains, suspense. It demonstrates the religious persecution that existed then. It demonstrates the Class differences of that era. It demonstrates the attitude towards women of that day (they were considered basically to be nothing more than property and men paid little attention to them outside of the home -- and sometimes inside of the home -- the very same attitude held my many cultures in this world today). And, sadly, even the Church held that same attitude. The author uses the life of John Bunyan as a springboard for this story but it must be remembered that this book is a FICTIONAL love story. Keeping these things in mind, I found this book to be very interesting to the point that I could not stop listening to it (yes, I use both Audible & the Kindle version). At one point, I found myself gasping and yelling (to no one!), NO! Even recognizing this book to be fiction, I am, now, searching for books on the life of John Bunyan as I want to know the real preacher.

Absolutely love this book!It has a little of everything in it and saved me buying several of Mary's alternate baking books (most of these recipes seem to be compiled from previous books).The recipes are easy to follow (some are more involved than others - but the steps are easy to follow) and what I've made thus far has been delicious.I really enjoy the baker tips, and if you are just getting started, there are helpful guides in the front of the book on what equipment/ingredients you should stock up on. There are also conversion charts in the front, though I would encourage any serious baker to buy a scale for dry measuring, most wet measuring cups have metric on one side.

I bought this book after becoming obsessed with The Great British Bake Off on PBS. I'm an American so most of these recipes are new to me. There's a good variety and also some great tips on types of ingredients, bakeware to use, etc. Word to the wise to my fellow American bakers, there's a temperature conversion chart at the front of the book, but keep an eye on your bake. Some of mine have cooked much faster than the time listed in the book.

Wonderful recipes, but a bit of a challenge from the US side of the pond. Our ovens don't have the same settings, so it's kind of a challenge to guess at temperature/fan speed conversions. Google helps considerably with measurement translations, and we've found that the extra challenges are still worth the effort.

I used to bake a lot but gave it up 10 years ago since I am living alone in a new town. Watching Mary Berry and Mr. Hollywood on Netflix got me excited about baking again. This book is very well organized, the recipes are easy to find and to follow, there are lots of great pictures since some of the baked goods may be unfamiliar to Americans so we can tell what our efforts should produce.I had become afraid of baking , I thought I was getting too old and disorganized, Mary Berry is SIX years older than I am, if she can do it then so can I.

Easy recipes. Wife loves it. Careful of product substitutions like british icing sugar - it is not the same as confectionare sugar, has no corn starch or clumping agents. look for 10x sugar with nothing added

The recipes are in grams and ounces so you can be successful no matter how you measure. The front of the book describes various key ingredients we all use when baking along with explanations for the various names we call the same thing on this side of the pond. Strong flour vexed me but from her writing it is clear that Miss Mary is likely talking about what we call bread flour with it's higher protein levels. Lovely book, well laid out and easily used by beginner and accomplished bakers.

I've made a bunch of cakes from this, and the instructions have been clear, and the flavors outstanding.The only thing I've had issues with is the cooking time. The cooking times seem pretty close when cooking in cast iron, but standard baking pans need far, far less than stated. I've ruined a couple of cakes, even when reducing cooking time. For example, The "Cut & Come Again" cake on p90, you're meant to bake it for 75-90 mins @ 350'F. I baked it for 50 mins, and it was still significantly overcooked (inedible). I had a slightly flatter cake tin than suggested, which may have contributed a small amount, but not enough to produce the result. I'm going to try this again, and check the cake at 30 mins.Overall though, Mary's a winner and despite needing to fiddle with the timing, this has become my new favorite cake book.

Cookbook includes a conversion table for oven temps which is very helpful for those of us in the states and those who do not have a convection oven. Thank you!!
