The series itself is great and I've been using it since its inception in my teaching studio and love it. The problem is that the Kindle version has a number of graphical mistakes not present in the print version. Hoping this gets fixed soon.Here's an example from page 13...

I use both Alfred's Prep Course and Basic Piano library and decided to try the Premier Piano Course with a new student. It did take me a bit to adjust to the order with which the book introduces concepts, however, it seems more complete than the basic library. It cues the teacher on each page rather than relying on your memory with various concepts when introducing new notes, techniques, etc. I also really like that each lesson in the book and theory book introduce ear training, or exploring outside the "box" of music lessons, allowing the student to play around more on their piano at an earlier age. It's a five star book for me but I still do use the Basic Piano Library and when I teach, I use concepts from each. As a whole, this book series is much more thorough than the older editions. PLUS, the CD is fabulous!!! So motivating for students.

The Premier series is excellent for beginning pianists as is the Piano Adventures series, which I usually use simultaneously with the Premier series to ensure that students have mastered those important incipient skills. The Music Tree works well with these as it is an interval approach that requires students to move into various hand positions early in their study and supports fluent reading of both note names and intervals.

I won't repeat what the general description says- I thoroughly agree! I would add that most songs in this series are solid stand-alone solos, and also feature beautifully scored teacher duets, which afford the students weekly opportunities to make live music with another musician!! The teacher duets are in the tradition of the classics (often based on specific and named classical pieces), jazz, and eclectic accompaniment styles, so the student's musical taste is further developed. Slam dunk!One more note about duets: teachers, our part is a tad more complicated than the accompaniments, say, in the same level of Faber. I find a quick run through the night before lesson day is helpful (but so worth it!)

I don't hate the book, in fact I almost exclusively use Premier Piano books with students. However, the last 1B Theory book I ordered at $5.48, arrived with a good portion of the cover ripped off. I wondered why the price was so low. Nothing in the description indicated that I was ordering a damaged book. My student does not want it and now I have to find another book and either eat the cost of the torn book or go through the hassle of returning it.

I can't say enough about the Alfred's premier piano course as a teacher. They are a great improvement over the regular Alfred's series and certainly more interesting to the student. There is no substitute for putting in the hard work and practice but these books at least make it more interesting. I am heavy on theory in my lessons so specifically really like the theory books as supplement. They coordinate with the lesson book pages which is great.

CD was worthless - too much added music overlaying the piano. Lots of wasted paper, little in the way of lessons. The John Thompson's series is much better.

With Dennis Alexander involved in the plan of the Alfred Premier Piano Course it has to be a winner. Also the layout of the pages isclean, a good size for little ones. Pieces are fun and concepts clear. A very good reading series.

Mr. Wells, in addition to his excellence as a non-fiction writer, has penned the fiction Catahoula Bayou Trilogy of life in the Bayou Black region of South Louisiana (highly recommended). His feel for dialog and the nuances of the temperament and world-view of the region is not manufactured. He just steps into a time machine of his memories and must have taken his iPhone to record this stuff with such accuracy.I am a life long resident of this Gumbo Belt. I have eaten gumbo for over 60 years and cooked many pots myself; what I knew about gumbo was that it is GOOD. This book completes my education.In the first chapters, Mr. Wells respectfully and skillfully addresses the history and “modern” progression of this magnificent gift from God we call Gumbo. He deconstructs what we now call cultural appropriation of its name and roots, from the Native Americans and African-American slaves to the fortunate (for us) arrival of the Cajuns to my (as his) home in South Louisiana. In this section, Mr. Wells demonstrates his skill as a journalist, historian and erudite teacher. It is sometimes an academic ethnological treatise but most often a metaphor for the gumbo of the cultural blending of what makes American great.Where Mr. Wells really shines is in the rest of the book, where he shares stories seeking an answer to the most important question to those who live in the Gumbo belt: Who makes the best gumbo?In some sense, this focus is similar to Mark Kurlansky's, books on salt, milk and cod. In some sense it is similar to Rick Bragg’s recent book on the home cooking of his childhood in another part of the South. The difference is that Mr. Wells is a far superior writer and storyteller.This book will make you laugh out loud and without pretension, will educate you on the life and beauty of what the blending of immigration has done for our country.My only issue is on his insistence that his mama’s gumbo was the best. I respect his devotion to his mother, but unfortunately he did not have the privilege to taste my mama’s gumbo.He is correct however that a chicken and sausage gumbo must have a dark roux and the file must be used while serving, not cooked in the gumbo. Mr. Wells is respectful of those who follow a different drummer, but as he and I know, they are wrong.I also wish he had omitted his discovery that some put sweet potatoes in a gumbo. That is a fact I did not need to know.This book is highly recommended.

Ken Wells is truly one of the BEST writers of Louisiana folkways. This book is part memoir, part history, part mouth-watering food blog and 100% delightful. He guides you through a wonderland of gumbo adventures from an International Gumbo Festival in New Iberia (where you learn about whiskey-infused whipped cream shots), to the kitchen of Commanders Palace (they put brandy and foie gras in their gumbo), to the fabulous “gumbo factory” of Chef Folse (I want to go on THAT tour). It includes several great interviews of cooking icons all over the GUMBO BELT of south Louisiana like Wayne Baquet of Lil Dizzys in the Treme. Though he cooks up a mean gumbo, it’s red beans and rice with his designer sausage he would be asking for as a last meal on death row. You’ll learn that Dooky Chase’s was one of the first black-owned, fine-dining restaurants in America where Martin Luther King Jr. hung out strategizing with other civil rights activists back in the day. New words pop up like roder (ro-day) which means to idly roam or sightsee. You are shocked as he describes the proper way to cook and eat squirrel brains (eeww) but laugh when he tells the story of the headless frog that jumped out of his mom’s frying pan when it hit the hot grease and drool as he gives you the step by step process of preparing real Cajun French coffee AND HOMEMADE BLUEBERRY DUMPLINGS. Ahhhh!My only criticism, and this isn’t for Ken, but for his EDITORS. There were several missing pronouns, conjunctions and prepositions which made me have to go back and re-read sentences. That’s YOUR JOB, people at Norton. I won’t mention any names, M.T. It still gets 5 stars. In fact I’d give it 10 stars if I could.

This was one of the best books I have read about Cajun life on the bayou! It was so interesting and funny too. I lived in Louisiana for a few years and visited in that area. I have even tried his mother's recipe and it was delicious! Fun reliving my years there.

Fate has ordained that my stomach cannot digest bell peppers. That means I have never eaten and will never eat gumbo. But I ate this book! It’s about gumbo cooking, sure, but more about gumbo cooks. They populate an American enclave less familiar to me than the highlands of New Guinea. And they’re alive in the wild, swarming swamp of Ken Wells’s memories of kinfolk and kidhood. His writing goes down as smoothly as gumbo must for those more fortunate. How I roux the day those peppers turned against me. “Gumbo Life” has left me steeped the bayou’s pungent spirit, and very hungry.

This book is simple exceptional. The writing is exquisite and draws you in from the first paragraph. This isn't just about gumbo,, but rather an entire culture. Yes, there are recipes, but the highlight has to be how enjoyable the author has made this read. Buy this book!

I read Gumbo Life while on vacation in Puerto Rico. We were staying with a chef who knew little of gumbo...I read aloud from the book so much that HE wanted a copy (which I sent, of course). This book is beautifully written and scholarly yet great fun (and mouth watering). I was at the grocery store within hours of getting home for onions, bell pepper, and celery (holy trinity) plus chicken thighs and andouille to add to the quail I already had. HEAVEN! Read it! Especially those of you for whom Winter won't be over for several more months. You'll be happy you did.

Bonnie's boy takes you into her home to see how she created this scrumptious dish and then follows a path into other people's homes and restaurants all along the gumbo belt. In his downhome descriptions, Wells lets us know the origin and development and variations of gumbo. We happily discover how this little-known dish has become so popular worldwide. very good book excellent drawing and information

Russell Freedman's, "In the Days of the Vaqueros" was written for young adults and in this endeavor it suceeds. It is a 70 page hard back book with numerous high quality paintings, sketches and photographs. He tells the story of the Vaqueros from the arrival of the Spanish in Mexico up to modern days. When I purchased the book, I was hoping to find a book written for adults. Yet, I was not dissapointed. The book's production values are very high and I really enjoyed the art work.

If you like western history this book might really open your eyes with respect to where our cowboy culture started. A fast read, but has many really nice illustrations. It should be in the library of ever cowboy, and wannabe.

I loved this book so much, that after I read it at the Library, I bought it over Amazon. It is intended for young people, but since I was doing research for a book I am writing, I didn't want to be overloaded with dry facts. This book gave me just enough, not too much, and the artwork is wonderful too.

Finally a young persons book with a different perspective on cowboys. The origins and role of the vaquero in America is discussed in a scholarly and insightful manner geared for young readers. If you are looking for a book about the traditional view of the cowboy than look elsewhere. The author, Russell Freedman does an excellent job describing how the Vaqueros were the first of their kind, their role in rodeos, where and how they lived on haciendas and ranchos, what they did at rodeos , the tools they used , the contests and games and the last of the vaqueros. These original cowherders were poor Indian laborers who were subject to the rich Spanish land owners who dominated the landscape of America after the conquest by the European Spaniards. This book is a good history lesson about life in the southwest and Mexico(one and the same at this particular point in history)during Spanish rule. This book is an excellent choice for a classroom or library in the middle or high school level for further enrichment in the education process. Limited English speaking students may find the language difficult but there are many Spanish words intersperced throughout the lessons to draw their interest. The drawings and photographs are well done; I only wish this book was presented in a larger format. This is a good book for a student to write a book report on and share the information within to the class. Highly recommended for students and adults alike who enjoy history.

This is not really a book-it's more like a magazine article. The book is in desperate need of an editor. The information was indeed basic-and poorly written. Look at all of the 5 star reviews...they are all very similar...could it be that the author had his 20 best friends buy the book and write poorly written reviews? Maybe... Don't waste your time or money.

If you can google well enough to find a Linux distribution to download, then you can google well enough to learn the contents of this book in about 10 seconds. The book feels like it was written as a class project by a group of english-as-a-second-language students, and roughly compiled into this self-published wasted of trees. ANY other Linux book will be more useful to you.

This book is amazing! The guides were written in a manner where it’s very easy for me to understand and follow! This is a very constructive guide. I highly suggest this book for those who are looking for a step by step guide. Great book! I highly recommend it to everyone!

I bought this book thinking it was dealing with one thing, only to find when I started reading, that it was not. It is a comparative type study of the Old Testament and the surrounding near Eastern teachings. Many "scholars" today say the OT has borrowed its "stories" from other pagan nations, and that there is nothing really new or unique about the religion contained within. This book seeks - and accomplishes - proving this to be incorrect.There was much in this book that kind of went over my head, and was more technical than I could fully grasp (either that or I wasn't fully able to concentrate while reading), but for the most part the book is filled with details of surrounding nations that really shed some new light on our understanding of the OT text. Some of the most striking revelations to me were looking at the first four of the ten commandments.After understanding how the other nations looked at deity, worshiped their deity, and made images of them - and what those images were there for - it really altered my understanding of why God said what he said in the commandments. My understanding of the intent and purpose of those commands has changed, not drastically or in direct opposition of what I believed on the topic, but I understand better what they were specifically worded to address, and how some of my application of them was not necessarily accurate.Another very interesting section was in dealing with the temples of a deity. Everything from how they were created, what they suggested, how they were described, and what took place there, it really gave some major depth to a lot of things; things that I really need to study further after re-reading part of this book again.Other than that highlight, just understanding some of the complex things the other nations believed, and yes, even seeing how some of that was common in the OT belief system, just gave depth and detail to my understanding of the ancient OT world. I think books like this should be required reading for all pastors; in order to bring the OT to life in sermons, they need to understand the culture and issues that surrounded the writings of it. Likewise for the NT text, the culture, context, and local issues - audience relevance - is the key to understanding the text.So, I gleaned quite a bit from this book, but would love to take the time for a more detailed reading to grasp more. I recommend this book as a great source of study for a better grasp of OT thought and practice.

Any Christian interested in the cultural context of the Old Testament needs to press the 'Add to Cart' button right now. John Walton puts forth a systematic presentation of the 'conceptual world' of the Old Testament where he compares ancient Near Eastern literature with the Bible. This trend has been happening in scholarly circles, but is usually done by those with secular approaches. Walton is the first modern evangelical to attempt this enterprise (besides maybe Niehaus) and has thus far succeeded. One must be patient with the book and have the humility to consider his arguments. Even if you don't agree with everything he says, you will still walk away with your money's worth.Main critiques:1) The first three chapters are more helpful as a reference than they are as a read. Perhaps that could have been noted somewhere.2) His conclusions can overstate the evidence at points (e.g. functional ontology,etc.)3) Most of the ancient Near Eastern material is textual (in fact, "canonical"); it has an impoverished appreciation for non-textual (and "non-canonical") archaeological data. However, perhaps the archaeological material would be too burdensome to the readers he is trying to reach.4) He is not concerned with establishing the feasibility of these particular cultural influences through the likes of trade interconnections, migrations, proximity, etc. Instead, the approach is more "this text/idea is ancient, so it can speak to biblical things regardless of historical, geographical, and linguistic barriers." However, this is not to say that this approach can still not be employed with caution.Considering everything said above, Walton's book is still valuable for those beginning their comparative studies. The critiques are only meant to help the untrained reader, and with that said, I would still highly recommend this book. Compared to other OT scholars who are too caught up in commentaries and lexicons to deal with the ancient Near Eastern material, Walton actually deals with it and makes it accessible to the student of the Bible. Hopefully there will be more confessional efforts to interface the Bible with the ancient Near East.

I am not a scholar, nor do I hold any degrees, but I have read many a book on various ANE topics, and I do not know if I have ever read a more thoroughly researched book. Walton's chapter on ANE ontology of deity is worth the whole book. Additionally, how that that ontological understanding impacts certain Old Testament cornerstones like the Decalogue and the 10 Plagues is astounding.As a long time Christian scholar, Walton avoids the all to common mistakes of simply saying that all of the OT is merely borrowing from the ANE, and the other mistake of saying that there are enough differences that we ought not busy ourselves comparing the two.This by no means an easy book to read and I would not recommend it as an introduction to this kind of field, but if you can handle the footnotes, if you have a basic working understanding of some of the major ANE myths, and are interested in how the Hebrew Old Testament fits in all of that, it will be well worth your time.On a final note, I hunted down Walton's email address at the university where he teaches, and wrote an email thanking him for the work put into this book and how thoroughly I enjoyed reading it both times I read it. Believe it or not, I got an email back from him the following morning! Five stars for that alone.
