Fantastic historical cookbook! This is the original cookbook, not the updated version. I have that one too. I have enjoyed this cookbook for the history of what was eaten in the early 1900's & how things were cooked & using what kind of pans & utensils. This was a teaching cookbook & a lot of tips. But there are a few areas that I hadn't a clue as what it was a about. Fun to read & learn. I have been cooking for 40 yrs & find this a fun interesting book for myself.

I bought two copies for Christmas gifts ... one for a young wife and one for a senior citizen -- both were thrilled. The book has everything from boiling an egg, exchanging ingredients in a recipe, to more elaborate dishes. I only wish the book and the type size were a little larger. The fonts size is small and not easy on the eyes, but this is a great item.

Wanted a book close to the original and this was it. The editions since the 1960's have had a bit of controversy and I wanted a copy that dated earlier.

If you want to know how your grandmother cooked from scratch then this is the book for you!My mother was born in 1906 and she and her sisters all made homemade stock, broth, bread and canned their own vegetables and made preserves and jellies from scratch. This book shows you how to do all of this and much much more.Ever wondered what a Mason (Ball) Jar was for? Then this book will show you what to make and put in them.

What a fun book this is! It is a nice piece of history with many recipes that are useful today. It gives me clues as to many recipes that my grandmother (who was born in 1885) made for us - great comfort food! I can't wait to cook my first bear!

Excellent "old school" cook book. I inherited my original copy from my mother and have been using it ever since. I have replaced it twice. Want to know how to make a simple baked custard? Make great pancakes from breadcrumbs, I could go on but suffice to say, the 7th edition is it. Go no further.

So. Cool . Yes , it helps if you are an experienced cook ....I would not recc. this to a newbie to the kitchen . But if you have some knowledge under your belt this is not only fun to plow through but , with tweaks or not , there are some fascinating bits of American culinary history here that taste great .

I bought this cookbook because it has a recipe for a cake we always had for birthday's when growing up. Not only does it have the recipe I was looking for but it is a fun read as well. If you are a cookbook collector or just love old fashioned, good recipes, this is a good one.

Fantastic introduction to machine learning in Python. The examples are well written, and do a very nice job of introducing both the implementation and the concept for each model. I'm halfway thru the book, and am really enjoying it.I have a background in math and wrote software professionally for a number of years, but haven't spent much time doing either for the past 5-10 years. This book is technical enough to keep me interested, and accessible enough to allow me to ramp up on the language and the scikit framework.An added bonus - the instructions actually allowed me to set up my development environment, and the code in the book actually runs!100% recommend for someone looking to get started in ML with Python.

This book walks thru a TON of ML algorithms and applications with example code but the code is so succinct that it's not really a programming book as much as a crash course in some ML math libraries available for Python, what the algorithms do and when to use them. It doesn't get into the math but it does give clear examples and explanations of when to use each algorithm and how. It's all terribly practical and understandable. I'm a fan. Also btw I'm a computer programmer and ML novice... I'm not used to reading Python but it's simple enough if you know other languages.

The book is printed in black-and-white making it *really* hard to understand which classes / data points the authors are referring to.Nevertheless, this is a good intro book and a nice companion to online classes that do not provide written notes.

This is a great book, and I'd say it is even great for those that are not familiar with python (you just obviously won't be able to run the code). For anyone with some basic understanding of linear algebra/statistics, the authors are able to present to you all the important (and sometimes subtle but significant) details, without the usage of equations, and more importantly, how they all relate to one another.All the concepts mentioned here are heavily backed with well thought of and well presented figures, in such a way that again I'd suggest you don't even need python to understand. If you do know python, loading the data sets and reproducing the figures is just a few lines of easy to understand code away (with the exception of the mglearn library includes which does some "plotting magic" for you. However, I believe each of them were appropriate. You can ignore them and make the plots in your own way, or just print the variables, it just may not look as publication friendly).Normally, I hesitate purchasing books that claim they may explain algorithms without the need of equations, and I expect them rather to be cook books of lightly and disjointly explained techniques (like an encyclopedia). However, I do not think such is true of this book. The power of scikit-learn is demonstrated and the algorithms behind them explained intuitively, and are referred as to how they fit together and complement each other.As with any introductory read, a supplement is needed from time to time and the authors' reference to Elements of Statistical Learning is a useful one (equation heavy). There are points in the book where the author defers to elements of statistical learning. I found these points suitable since further explanation would be out of scope.I read this book on my free time while on vacation, and much of the time I didn't have access to a computer. The concepts were so well presented that it was just a nice leisurely read. When I finally had time to access a computer, I was able to try the techniques on my data sets with some browsing back and forth through the book again, but otherwise with little effort.Finally, since I myself am a researcher, I would recommend this book to any other researcher willing to start delving into the world of machine learning. Further reading will always be necessary, but this book will give you such a good intuitive understanding and overview of the subject matter that you'll know what to do to proceed next, and how to do it without running in circles. Even better, you'll likely already have applied it to your research!

Of the books I bought for the same task, this was by far the most helpful for building practical machine learning applications.The book is a great introduction to the scikit-learn framework which, in my opinion, is an extremely elegant machine learning tool kit.Reading this book helped me improve the quality of the code I was developing for the project which dramatically improved the speed I could produce new results for the project.If you are looking for an extremely theoretical text on machine learning, then you might want to look elsewhere.If you are looking for a guided introduction to the "bread-and-butter tools" of a great machine learning framework in Python, buy this.

I would love to read more high quality queer fairy tales and mythological stories, so I approached Thorn with considerable enthusiasm. From the beginning it was clear this novel would honor the tone and themes of the original Beauty and Beast, while adding a much needed layer of feminism.The basic plot of Beauty and the Beast has always contained tricky elements...a captive coming to love their captor can easily veer off into Stockholm Syndrome territory. I felt the author of Thorn handled this aspect relatively well, allowing the relationship to evolve over time, leaving the heroine a lot of choice about her personal boundaries. It never had that "icky" vibe some BatB retellings suffer from.The overall feel of the story was a highlight, capturing the wild beauty of the winter mountains as well as the joy and anguish of first love. However, there were times when the author overdid these elements, trying a little too hard for intense emotions and poetic descriptions, causing the language to become repetitious and forced. This, in turn, slowed the pacing and made the story drag in places. Nevertheless, I enjoyed my journey into the Huntress' realm, and I look forward to seeing what this author will write next.

After the death of their mother and other financial hardships, Rowan, her two sisters, and father move to the mountains where winter rules harsh and deep. Old folklore of the Huntress, a cold and terrifying warrior woman, are unknown to the family, so when Rowan's father returns from a hunting trip with a white rose for his daughter, how could he have known the rule he broke or the cost he would have to pay? The Huntress takes Rowan away from the remote cabin, her sisters, and the young man who she was arranged to marry and brings her, via bear ride, to the highest mountain top, where the Huntress’ castle hides. At first, Rowan is homesick and scared of what might become of her, but she adjusts and then learns to thrive in the new environment. Unfortunately, the curse that had once plagued the Huntress is wading and Rowan has to fight for another season with the woman who she has come to love.The imagery in this book is outstanding. Burke is a very talented writer and weaved such beautiful proses throughout the story that often caused me to re-read paragraphs just to enjoy them again. The skillful writing in this book made the story even more compelling and lent itself to driving a vivid setting, perfect pacing, and well-rounded characters. Seriously, I actually stopped hating how long this winter has lasted when reading of the lovely white drifts in Thorn.Rowan’s character change is exciting and enticing. I liked how we learned more about her past in the city as the story went on and she reflected on her situation. The Huntress, like the Beast, is influenced by Rowan’s presence into regaining some humanity. The warmth between Rowan and the Huntress is touching. I loved what the lake symbolized, literally or figuratively, it was so beautiful and I enjoyed how it played into the climactic scene towards the end.

This has got some of the most beautifully written prose I have read in les-fic. Thank you Anna Burke for writing this and letting me become so involved in the world of these two characters. I loved Compass Rose, and I really need a sequel to come out asap, and your second novel has really shown what a great writer you are

This was a stunning retelling of a story we've heard but often come back to. Beautifully written with an even more beautifully crafted love story. I fell in love with winter and the quiet of snow, with a promise of salvation waiting under ice.

I enjoyed the detailed writing and the story had a bit of uniqueness that I enjoyed. I felt like the relationship could have been explored more, or...just more, I guess. For a short read it was satisfying.

John Bartletta honors his boss and fellow horseman, Ronald Reagan. We learn that Reagan was a true horseman. We learn how the mounted Secret Service came to be. He liked the challenging horses. When he was at the barn, he was one of the hands. If you like horses, you’llProbably like this book.Great line by Dr. Doug Herthel. After examining the grey Anglo Arab El Alamein, Herthel reportedly looked at Barletta and said, “I can’t believe you let the leader of the free worldride this wing nut!”There is one - one - instance that readers may consider political. Barletta mentions Reagan’s reaction to learning the KAL passenger plane was shot down by the former USSR. THAT’S IT!

This is very well done except for few minor editing issues. The most important part is the private glimpse we get of Reagan. Reagan was a superb rider going back to his reserve Commission in the US Cavalry in the 1930s. He learned to ride the Army way although he could not later pass the physical for active duty when the war began. His riding was right out of the Cavalry Manual that George Patton knew by heart. Reagan always rode thoroughbreds and had a couple of stories about his movie career days riding. The author came to know the President after the 1980 election because there had not been an American president who rode horses in a long time. Finding a Secret Service detail who could ride was a big task. As it happened, the author loved horses and knew about them. This began a 25 year relationship with the Reagans that ended only with Ronald Reagan's death in 1997. I lived in the Malibu area when Reagan was governor and drove by his ranch in Malibu Canyon many times in the later 50s and early 60s. There is a lot detail about horses and riding in the book that adds to the enjoyment. There is an air of authenticity about Reagan that we are losing with our presidents. We seem to be in an "American Idol" phase of choosing presidents now, although I proud to say I have never seen the program in question. Reagan was far more than an actor as president. He probably could have made a living as a horse handler. An excellent read.One revealing early moment came, at the inauguration, when Jimmy Carter's wife was astonished that Nancy Reagan knew the Secret Service man's first name !

A disjointed collection of stories in no chronological order. Tells how Secret Service Agent Barletta became President Reagan's bodyguard on horse as none of the other agents could actually ride a horse, although they would say they could.Barletta grew up in the Boston area with a large family, did some horse riding as a youth, went into the military and eventually led trail riding out in Arizona, becomoming an expert horseman.When Reagan (Code name 'Rawhide') becomes president Barletta is in the right place at the right time. He shares deep and profound insight such as the president didn't really care to listen to the radio that much, wow!Nancy Reagan gets herself knocked off a horse and he catches her before she even realizes she is falling. They encounter a rattlesnake on a ride and Nancy demands Barletta shoot it, so he does.There are some interesting things like when the President goes to England and rides horses with the Queen.We hear that the President's children are ... overbearing, Ron Jr really doesn't want the secret service with him, waaa.I would have given it three stars, but at the end with Reagan in the throws of Alzheimer's disease we get some touchingly sad stories.In the end Barletta has encoured some physical injuries over the years and is no longer physically able to gurad them so he has to resign, sad. He attends the Reagan funeral.He starts repeating himself at page 190 and Young America's Foundation is mentioned a couple times as it now owns the Reagan Ranch, it appears this was written in conjunction with them for advertising.Has several pages of color pictures in the middle.Does mention that the ONLY place the Presidemt could drive a vehicle (a Jeep) was at the ranch. It has some moments of insight.Does feature several horse-related stores that those in the know about horses will enjoy.

Reading Mr. Barletta's book brought President Reagan "back to life" for me, as well as introducing him as a person, not my President, to me. As I was reading this book near the President's birthday, it was especially endearing. This is a well written, easy read and I highly recommend it!

Reading "Riding with Reagan" is like sitting down with an old friend while he tells you about the greatest job he ever had.He doesn't always tell the story in strict chronological order; sometimes something important occurs to him and he goes off on a tangent. His memories don't always get every detail exactly right. He might repeat himself a little; he stops sometimes to explain some technical thing about his job or how to do a thing the right way, before he relates an anecdote about how somebody goofed things up a bit.You're enjoying the story so much, though, you don't really pay attention to the occasional slip; you just want him to tell you more.This old friend took his job v. seriously, and he has a lot of respect for the people he worked for. He misses them, and he wants you to see them the way he did. He tells his story in a heartfelt way and helps you feel like you were there.To illustrate his story, he includes lots of pictures, and you probably haven't seen most of them before. What he really does is give you a glimpse into a world you may not have thought much about -- what those secret service guys really do -- and he shows you another side of a man that wasn't often covered.

Review of Bozeman’s and Youtie’s "The strength in numbers" by Paul F. Ross Track the number of authors whose names appear on articles in the peer reviewed journals of science through recent time and you’ll see those numbers increasing. A few articles have had the author count go into the hundreds, an occasional article into the thousands. The days when a lone scientist can produce work that colleagues think deserves a place in the literature of science seem numbered. Bozeman and Youtie, trained as political scientists, he working at Arizona State University and she working at Georgia Tech, review the current status of the science of team science. The typical number of authors varies substantially by field, physics seeming to top the___________________________________________________________________________________________Bozeman, Barry, and Youtie, Jan "The strength in numbers: The new science of team science" 2017, Princeton University Press, Princeton NJ, viii + 229 pages___________________________________________________________________________________________number of authors while math still is often done by the lone contributor. Bozeman and Youtie review the literature of this science of team science and make their own contributions. The “team science” they study is restricted to academy-based science and the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields with the addition of economics. This overlooks all the behavioral and management sciences (except economics) and overlooks all research done in business and industry, all research done by management consulting firms. This reader, a behavioral and management scientist, of the kind who sometimes says “If you’ve not measured it, don’t talk to me about it,” finds their work to be of little value. As a scientist, this reader expects the goals of science to be advancing knowledge, both theoretical and practical, and producing benefits for those who pay for the knowledge (often taxpayers or customers) and expect to consume the knowledge … many of those publics living and working off campus and around the world such as organizational leaders, policymakers, and people everywhere. Bozeman and Youtie see only the academic goals of doing science – adding curriculum vitae items needed to advance an academic career or doing research activities needed to educate students. Given this reader’s expectations as he opens this book – somewhat like wanting to become acquainted with Manhattan – Bozeman and Youtie take me for a visit to the Battery for half a day. The authors understand from prior studies seeking to understand how science gets done that motivations and goals for scientists are complex. They do a survey conducted by targeting individuals in selected departments of selected universities, contacting them online, and getting questionnaire responses describing their experiences. The questionnaires have many items, as they should. The results are reported as percent response to each item alternative with the author’s interpretation of what that means. Easily at hand to scientists, and seldom used, is the statistical method called factor analysis which allows the scientist to disentangle the relationships among many variables and describe what is happening based on a minimum number of influences (factors). Recognizing the complexity of their topics, the authors have failed to use the methods of data acquisition and analysis for gaining insight in this multivariate challenge. The authors identify different goals brought to scientific work by scientists of differing backgrounds, different expectations from different audiences about the outcomes of scientific work worth tracking, different styles for managing collaborative efforts, and so on. Perhaps this taxonomy of the characteristics of collaborative science may have value for future research if someone operationalizes the definitions of each of these variables so they can be measured. Operationalizing the definitions is very doable in this reader’s view. It was not done by these authors. It may be that some specialists will find ~500 references among the authors’ citations to be of value. In their exposition, Bozeman and Youtie say ‘These authors (citing a work) have discussed this topic’ but consistently fail to say what conclusion the authors have reached, what methods they used, and Bozeman’s and Youtie’s view of the value of the research. Bozeman and Youtie write “There are many disquisitions about the relative status of the ‘hard’ sciences and the social sciences and many of these end up concluding that ‘social science’ is an oxymoron – social yes, science maybe not” (p 86). It seems the authors, trained in political science, are uncertain about the difference between science and journalism, the characteristics that differentiate the two. The authors’ uncertainty in their perspective about what constitutes science, in reviewing what they have read, in what should be addressed in a “science of science,” and in using nothing more than interviews and a poorly-conceived-and-analyzed online survey of academicians as the basis for this work wins restless impatience from this reader. I'm sorry for anyone who needs this book.But hopefully you also find it very helpful. I started reading just weeks after my son lost his battle with cancer. It's now been 5 months, and I just finished reading. So much of what I struggled with are expressed by these moms, which is sad but comforting. They provided real life applications to tough situations that I was better prepared for because of their words (How to handle holidays, for example!)

The book gave me new insight into being supportive to a friend who has lost an adult daughter. I now know I should never expect my friend to be "normal" again, but there are many ways I can still help.

I saw myself in this book, and I can relate to their experiences. It hits the "nail on the head" in all areas while trying to live day to day, as I too am trying to live after losing my only child. I'm so happy to know that I'm not alone grieving a child in the same ways that only we (grieving mothers) can understand. God Bless!

I lost my son on New Year's Eve and was sort of lost. I did not want to go to any sort of therapy or group meetings; I have always been a shy person. My husband suggested finding a book and I found this one. As I read it, I discovered that many of the little things that I could not do were written in these pages.This book allowed me to know that the way I was feeling was ok and that there is no timetable for grief. I kept thinking that after 6 months I should feel better, but the women in this book made me realize that the grief does not go away; you just learn to manage it in whatever way you can.Anyone who has lost a child should read this book; no matter how you are grieving, you will find that one of these nine women have probably felt the same things and it really is comforting to know that you are not the only one and that you are not going just a little crazy.

This book meant so much to me, as I lost my daughter six years ago when she was 21. Truly, you can never know how it feels until it has happened to you. I don't ever want anyone to feel the pain and loss that I still feel to this very day, but it is good to understand that I am not the first, nor will I be the last to have this happen. I feel like I can listen better to someone who has gone through this. Yes, you do finally get "Beyond Tears", but the pain is always there.

Got this from the library and knew within a few pages I needed my own copy. Grief when you lose a child is crushing. I found myself nodding and saying " yes, that's how it feels". They get it, no matter how YOU feel after this kind of loss, one of these 9 women have been there.

I lost my son in a car accident 4 months ago. Reading helps me. This has been the most helpful book.

A gift for a friend who lost her daughter to suicide. She was most grateful for this book.

I have used this book as an IV room Pharmacist time and time again. Now that I am in management we have decided to purchase this book for not only the Pharmacy but for every Nursing Unit. This is by the most useful IV reference I have found.

This book rates up there with cup-o-noodles and double cushion socks when you are a nurse who works in the ICU or ER. This book is an excellent clinical reference that is easy to read. Drugs are listed genericly with common dose ranges, indications, reactions, iv compatibility and incompatability information. The only thing that I wish they would highlight is the elimination half life, peak and duration information which can be found in the davis iv drug book. I leave this book in my work bag and goes everwhere with me. I have owned 2 other copies of this book and update every 2 years or so. I would keep on buying this book, although the above tweak would make it perfect for me.

I bought this book for over 20 years, I buy the newest at every 2 years. Even if I'm a french nurse, I consult this book almost every night that I work. On a night shift, it's not possible for us to consult a pharmacist if we need some informations quickly so, this book is very useful to know how to give I.V. medications. We always find what we are looking for; dilution, rate of administration, incompatibilities, adversed reactions and many more.... Those informations are up to date and it's easy to consult them even if we are not pretty good in english!
