They are all really cool projects and my son is enthusiastic about building them all, but it is a lot of work for me measuring andcutting out all the tiny intricate pieces of cardboard needed. He is 7 and can help putting it together but I definitely need to do must of the work. It is fun and I like doing this sort of thing, just be prepared to do a lot of time consuming work yourself unless the child is much older and able to cut precisely with a utility knife.
Detailed directions and photos. With help the kids have gotten to build some of the contraptions and work out the kinks with help of the troubleshooting tips in the book! :)
Enjoyed
Got this for my 7yo son for Christmas. He’s been busy building since! Loves it and it’s a great project for him and dad. Definitely need an adults supervision and help, but simple enough to make work.
So much to love about this book. It's easy to understand, the layout is clear and the directions are easy to follow. In reality, the machines are not necessarily that "useful" because most of them complete tasks that we can easily do on our own, but I love how fun it makes building a machine to take on a task. The instructions in this title are clear and laid out step by step, they use common materials and tips for successful building are also shared.I can see many kids enjoying this book as well as being a good resource for classes exploring a unit on simple machines.
My 10 y.o. son and I used this book to make one of the Rube Goldberg machines for a school project. The ideas are good and it is fairly well organized. That being said, mid way through a project we were scrambling for additional supplies not listed on supply list and trying to analyze pictures to figure out why we have 4 pieces listed in step-by-step instructions but only one piece is shown in the corresponding picture. We had to flip through all the pages to see if finished product looked like all 4 pieces were stacked or we were just supposed to have extra pieces...then just make an educated guess. Also "glue stacks A with cardboard skin"..but there is no stack A, there is a stack K though so they must have meant K? Frustrating several times throughout project but we got it done and the candy dispenser works. The book was very useful but could use additional editing.
