From School Library Journal

PreS—A sweet, understated story. In minimal yet well-structured text, a child asks, "Do you love me?" Even, he wonders, if he's not gentle? What about, he asks, if "I jump in puddles wearing my new sneakers?" The protagonist, a boy with a thatch of red hair, pinhole eyes, and an earnest yet worried expression, perfectly captures the universality of this question. Phelan's illustrations bring this quiet text to exuberant life with pastel watercolors as the child and his dog leap, jump, and make mischief throughout the white space on which they exist. The perfectly timed text, with questions one after the other, listing all the possibilities this boy can imagine, ends of course with the perfect answer. "No matter what you do…I'll always love you." There are other books with this theme, including Jeanne Willis's Mommy Do You Love Me? (Candlewick, 2008) and Debi Gliori's No Matter What (Harcourt, 1999). Both of these titles feature animal characters and have more text. Use this wonderful book in toddler storytimes, but make sure you get extra copies—there will be a big demand.—Jane Marino, Bronxville Public Library, NY Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. I ordered this as a mother's day present to my 4 year old son. It was perfect, especially since I just bought him new sneakers because he destroyed his from playing in puddles and the first thing he did was go into a puddle with the new ones. He likes it so well that he "reads" it to me.

Cute book for a little boy

I am a preschool teacher for three year olds, and I read this book to 50 people at our Mother's Day Tea. The mothers and children all loved it. A grandmother cried at the end! The simple text and beautiful pictures make this book a must read when you are trying to convey the unconditional love mothers bestow upon their children.

Love this book and I often give it as a baby shower gift.

This is a wonderful, simple, poignant book. As I read it, I thought of the many special needs children with whom I work. It's so appropriate for them and for their families, who love them unconditionally.I will share this book with parents in my speech pathology practice.

Humorous and so appropriate for preschoolers!!

A very short, but sweet book. There aren't many words.

Most children grow up knowing and being told often that their parents love them. But it's human nature to try to "earn" love, to feel we are loved as long as we {fill in the blank - action verb}. In this book, a little boy asks his continually asks his mom if she loves him when he does something well AND when he doesn't. It depicts a child's desire to be loved and the unconditional way a parent loves. The message behind this book is charming and sincere. It reminds me of a poem (don't ask me the name...) I loved when I was young about a small child that was continually messing up while trying to seek his mom's approval. I thought that poem was so funny and just loved it. It struck a cord with me, as I know this book must with many young children. This book is the companion book to I'll Be There, also by Ann Stott. Like that book, the illustrations here by Matt Phelan are beautiful. In some ways, the words tell the story better than the text, which is both a strength and a weakness of this book. Often the little boy says, "Do you love me when I {again fill in the blank}? Do you love me when I don't?" While I love text (It helps to promote language in kids and babies!), I also felt in certain places, the "Do you love me when I don't?" question would have been better left unsaid but simply drawn, the way it already is.Still, this book, like I'll Be There, I am certain will be a favorite in my house among the kids. Like I said, it speaks the mind of a child so well, and they will appreciate that.
