Very well written. I had no prior knowledge of the oil industry before I started reading and was surprised in the first few chapters as it reads like a story, which is a wonderful way set the stage for the more techinical subjects. I also found the detailed pictures and charts to be very helpful along with the 8.5x11 book size. The font size is also a good size, not to big nor small.
This book has essentially no information on "investing" in oil and gas companies. There are no outlines of the listed companies involved, no real numbers on cost structures nor how these vary between shale and offshore etc. There is also very little about oil and gas outside the US. The book should more accurately be called The Fundamentals Of Oil and Gas Production as it mainly covers the geology behind different types of oil deposits, the various drilling techniques, and alternative refined product types. There are plenty of facts about these matters but relatively few on the financial aspects of direct investment in this area. I purchased the book quickly after observing the large number of five star reviews. It is amazing how many early five star reviewers have never reviewed another book before or since.
This is quite simply not a good book. Beyond the fact the author seems to assume I am off to dig for oil myself (that seems to be the "investing" part of the title), it is very poorly written, making for an an incredibly boring read, even when the author himself seems genuinely excited. Do not be fooled by the interesting first chapter about the history of oil.
It was a great book for a person who is interested in o&g operations, but there was very little content describing investment strategies. If you are someone who is interested in finding more about how oil is discovered, drilled, transported and refined, this will be a great read. If you are interested in discovering how to wisely invest in these operations, you might want to look somewhat else.
This book was enjoyable to read. It has a lot of information that I wasnt expecting to find. I am a novice and found it to be written in a very non technical language which I found to be essential. I found the operational aspect of developing oil and gas projects from start to finish to be inspiring to say the least. The author seems to focus on management and proven assets instead of hear say numbers of a so called profitable company which I find to be an important part to any investment. I was slightly surprised to to find out some of the ways oil companies inflate there assets. I also thought the overall structure was well done too. It starts with the history of the industry oil and then explains natural gas as everyone is talking about how that is the next big thing. then the focus moves how these commodities are formed and found. The operations of developing these resources is explained next in great detail that is easy to understand for a novice. Once the oil or natural gas is found then it is transported and the strategies, logistics and people are outlined very well. The refining is also of importance as it shows the challenges for the commodity like natural gas to replace oil in the future. The end is very interesting as it bring the book together with potential future outcomes and trading of finished products along with the specifications of each product. Try not to skip chapters if possible as I found it to be important to know all details of the industry, I strongly believe that you have to know the challenges of the future, the difficulties it is currently facing and the yearly cycles of the industry in order to be successful. Understanding what a company does from day to day is the most important thing and the same can be said about the managers, CEO's and brokers that your money goes towards. Know every aspect of it all with this book before jumping into the industry for the first time and if you were in a deal that didnt turn out as well as you thought then this book might help you understand why and who is at fault if anyone.
As a novice to this industry, I felt the author did a perfect job of providing detail and explanation, while avoiding the arcane and extremely complex. The illustrations are cool. Language in book is straightforward and not too scientific.After reading the chapters on drilling a well, I was able to read up on Deepwater Horizon disaster and understand most of what went wrong. The author explains blowout preventers, well cement, casing width, etc...The book is an excellent investment in time and money for anyone wanting understand the fundamentals of the petroleum industry.
Well written and informative on the every aspect of the down, mid, and upstream sectors of the oil and natural gas industry. Very helpful resource for a novice investor like myself.
There is nothing actually wrong with this book. If you are interested in learning about how oil and gas drilling works, and how it is organized, and so on, this is a fine reference work.However, the title is "Investing in Oil and Gas". I thought that would tell me things like how to read the 10-K reports, what risk factors to look for, how to evaluate oil and gas investments based on their stock market fundamentals, and so on. Unfortunately there is not a word on those topics, so unless you are interested in investing directly in oil and gas drilling in your own company, as opposed to through the stock market, this may not be a terribly helpful work.
