With Guadalcanal secured in mid-1943, American, Australian, and New Zealand forces looked to advance up the Solomon Islands chain to neutralize the great Japanese military base at Rabaul. However, Japanese forces in the region remained formidable. The Allies would experience a painful learning curve...Experienced author Mark Stille has provided an interesting and informative narrative on the Allied campaign to take New Georgia and Bougainville. His coverage of the naval battles is especially good, with sharp, even-handed commentary and some excellent battle diagrams. Coverage of the fighting on land will also be of interest to readers, as the Allies learned to bypass major Japanese troop concentrations. The narrative is nicely supported with period photographs and modern illustrations. Well recommended as concise coverage to students of the campaign.

Kindle version is well written with some excellent maps of the ground and naval actions. However, I was disappointed by the photographs. About a dozen pictures had descriptions but the corresponding photographs are missing. Recommend the hard copy not the Kindle version.

Book was thorough and well written. I gave it 4 stars out of 5 because the artist who drew the renditions did a poor job. This is NOT up to the previous standards. Other books had much better and highly detailed renditions. Would I recommend this book, YES ! I will let the imaginations of the reader substitute for the renditions.

Very good book with many pictures,but the information about the battles was basic,I would recommend.

I've been a fan of Mark Stille's Osprey titles and have read most of them. This book has good qualities, but I'll confess disapointment with his rather cursory concluding assessment of the campaign's impact. Comparative losses aren't mentioned for a campaign that caused significant attrition of IJN's destroyers and submarines. Even the huge impact of the campaign in gutting the IJN's air units is largely ignored. Yamamoto and Koga's commitment of their carrier based aircraft to Rabaul, trying to hold off the American advances, led to such extreme losses in planes and pilots that Combined Fleet found itself unable to respond to American landings in the Gilbert and Marshall islands. Not discussed.

Soo happy with this book! My son loves other similar "interactive" books, so when we saw this, we ordered 3. We are giving 2 to our nieces and one to our 6yr old. It's a nice solid book, great colors and I'm so excited to give these as gifts!Update: we gave one to our 1yr old niece on Sat and she loved it! She walked around with the book asking everyone to read it to her. She had the story read to her about 4 times, even with a bunch of new toys, she picked this book. Every adult took a turn reading it too! Kid approved!

My youngest loves interactive books so she can be a part of the story - we have a small collection started of different ones to read. This one is a fun story, but also good for the changing of seasons.(Pictures not necessarily in exact order - wanted to give a general idea of the story)

Your child will actively learn about the changing seasons through the single apple tree featured in this adorable book.The book opens with an illustration of a stark tree. “There’s magic in this bare brown tree. Tap it once. Turn the page to see.” Turn the page and a single, bright green leaf hangs off one of the tree’s branches. This gentle book continues to ask its readers to perform several actions: rub, touch, jiggle, wiggle, brush and “blow the tree a tiny kiss.” With each action and page turn comes some magic – the tree forms buds and blooms flowers, the apples grow and plop down, the leaves turn colors, and the snow falls on the once-again bare tree.On the second-to-last page, a bird’s nest containing a single blue egg is nestled in the bare tree’s branches, a preview that spring is coming once again. “Close your eyes and count to ten,” the book requests. On the final page the sweet baby bird has hatched and two bright green leaves have grown: “Magic! It begins again.”This book was a godsend during New England’s more-bitter-than-usual 2013-2014 winter. My children would ask me to read it again and again, as there is something soothing – and magical – about its simplicity. This is equally true of the simple act of cuddling up with your children to read, which can serve as a magical balm for the winter blues.

Loved the hardcover book we got out of the library, so I was very happy to see the board book available to give as a gift to a one year old. In our experience, Dr Seuss hardcover books have shortened stories when converted to a board book, but I was very pleasantly surprised to see all original pages present in the board book version of this!

This book has been outstanding! We got it when my daughter was 18 months old and she has been obsessed ever since. She loves to act out the motions and read with or without an adult because she has memorized what to do on each page. We've discussed the seasons as they occur related to the book and reference it when we are outside. It is so nice to have an engaging non-technology book in our arsenal that she gets excited about! We've have shared the book with friends and family and it is now my go-to for baby showers!

Honestly I thought this book was boring and either the interactive directions were confusing and did not make sense or I was just so uninterested that I just simply did not pay attention. It was hard for my 4 year old to pay attention as well. Out of all the interactive books that I have purchased I would say this is my least favorite.

This book is brilliant- it teaches about the seasons by allowing children to play an active role. My preschoolers thought it was magical! I printed and laminated each of them a tree so they could follow the directives in the book and each activity participate. It is the perfect book for toddlers and preschool children.

This is a CHARMING book absolutely made for sitting with a young child on one's lap to read. The notion that the child "makes" the story happen by tapping on the pages is magical and creates a nice surprise for the child (and the adult!). It is a quiet book, full of feeling and wonder. (To preserve the wonder, I put this away for special reading times.)

First of all, this book is gorgeous. The photography, the design, the layout, everything... it's absolutely inspiring and would make a lovely coffee table book. The author's casual style is also inspiring and makes me want to get outside and experiment!That said, I would love a little more information and description with the recipes. None of the meat recipes have what temperature the meat should be cooked to to be consumed safely (important especially with pork and poultry) nor do they have descriptions of how to tell when it's done (ie. "juices run clear"). Most just say something along the lines of "cook until ready," which is not enough information for me or cooks without more classical training.Similarly, the recipes aren't accompanied by any kind of description, they're just presented as-is. I'd love one or two sentences describing the flavors of each dish. Many recipes have titles that allude to a fun story and I'm left wishing I knew what those stories were!That said, this book is a lovely inspirational tome and would also be great for trained chefs or home cooks who are able to fill in the holes with their own technical knowledge or experience.

This is my dream cookbook! The photos are absolutely stunning and tell a story within themselves. The recipes are so incredibly inspiring and I can’t wait to get outside and try some of them out. Regardless of whether or not you like to cook, this book is so beautiful, it’s worth having in your kitchen, camper van or on your coffee table.

I have a lot of cookbooks. A LOT! And when I say that this book is special, I mean it!Sarah and Luisa put together a stunning collection of approachable recipes. While I don't grill, camp, or consider myself to be outdoorsy at all, I suddenly want to because the book is so inspiring! Great gift for the outdoor lover! I can't wait to try out some of the recipes!

He compresses a lifetime of poignant, frequently funny, and sometimes heart rending experiences into a single exhausting day. I had thought about being a vet when I was young, and this book is closer than any other I have read to summarizing what the journey to skilled professional veterinarian is really like.The book opens and closes with the story of "Sage", a German Shepard with a potentially life threatening stomach disorder. It is the perfect case to explain the uncertainties of the world of veterinary medicine, and ultimately serves to explain the trials and joys of the job. Along the way there are many detours, including sections on methods of veterinary training in different countries, the emotional tolls of the job, the changing demographics of the profession, and the increase in exotic animals in common practice. I was especially amused by the diversion into the world of "ferret legging" on p. 201. "Ferret legging is a centuries-old English sport in which the contestant stuffs a pair of ill-tempered ferrets down his pants." Several restrictions apply, including a total ban on undergarments of any sort. The winner is the person who can keep the ferrets in their pants the longest. The current record holder is a 72 year old Welsh coal miner named Reg Mellor who has kept two ferrets in his pants for the unbelievable time of five hours and twenty-six minutes. Humorous diversions such as this break the tension of the life-or-death decisions that the majority of the book deals with, and are a welcome relief after some of the more nail-biting sections.My only critique of the book would be the rather enormous over-weighting of canine cases in the book, although I don't know if that is representative of Dr. Trout's practice, or if he simply prefers dogs to cats. Any animal lover should love and appreciate this book in its entirety, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

I liked this book. I didn't love it.The author (and reviewers) continually invokes the name and justified fame of James Herriott, so I dared hope for a similar style: Herriott's books are almost wholly story, with a bit of reflection, whereas this seemed to have reverse proportions. I got tired of, and honestly bored with, all the ruminating, moralizing, defense of his profession, and desperate protestations of affection for various animals and people. I'd have preferred for Dr. Trout to primarily let the tales themselves convey these things. In 25 years of practice, one would've thought there'd be enough memorable pets to fill these 285 pages with the humor and pathos I did see shining in the recollections salted in amongst the ponderings.

The pet stories are nice and some of the descriptions of procedures and diagnoses are interesting, but often the author suddenly change the subject and veers off in another direction, usually a lengthy complaint or some verbose, uninteresting statement about the current issues in veterinary medicine, which I found to be pretty boring. I ended up skipping over pages and pages of these missives in my effort to, as one reviewer aptly put it, "get back to the dog!" Dr. Trout should have simply stuck with the stories about the few pets mentioned in this book, instead of wasting the reader's time with lengthy diatribes. Then the book would have contained only about 50 pages instead of 306, making it a good "rainy day" read.

I really liked Tell Me Where It Hurts by Dr. Nick Trout. I love books about dogs and this book did not disappoint. It touched the heart, but there was nothing that made me overly sad - it was mainly happy endings. The author did a great job of intertwining his daily life as an animal surgeon with interesting facts and information about animals, veterinarians, and other experiences.I would highly recommend this book to readers who like stories about: animals, memoirs, veterinarians and especially dogs.

I guess I was hoping for a modern day James Herriot tale: a simple story with honesty, warmth, and humor. I had a hard time staying focused on this book, and found myself frequently skimming through pages. There were endless extended similes which quickly became irritating. I had to skip over paragraphs at a time just to see what happened next. Also, the author chose to present numerous cases as though he'd treated them all in one day. As a result, every time he checked on another patient he'd operated on early in the day, I had forgotten the details of that animal's case. It was even hard to keep track of the other doctors, interns, etc.-- too many characters briefly brought in, then reappearing much later.

As with many other pet owners, my pets, in my case - 4 hefty dogs - are my babies, and I have my vet on speed dial. The author, a veterinarian surgeon, does not pull any punches in his discussion of the health of his patients and the delicate art of dealing with the owners. The author makes several comparisons to fellow British veterinarian and author James Herriot of the famed "All Creatures Great and Small" series discussing the very same issues 80+ years ago. Treatments may have vastly changed, but not the animals various ailments or the attitudes of the owners. In this book, Dr. Trout receives an emergency phone call at 3 am to perform emergency surgery on a gravely ill dog. The book tells the action pretty much hour by hour for his work day that lasts almost 24 hours of constant action. The story comes to a well defined closing with the very same dog that it started with. Written with warm, humor and a vocabulary easy to understand, it is great for all ages of animal lovers or of those who don't know the difference between a domestic or feral cat. Well worth the cost and time

Purchased this for my son to read with me but the font on some pages were so small we could not read it. We tried changing font size and it would not allow us to do it!? Will be requesting money back.

Great little book, but several pages were not formatted correctly and were too small to read. Really disappointing. Going to ask for money bac on this one!!

We boughted this book based on the recommendation from kindergarten teacher. Recommended for 5-6 year old kids. My daughter enjoys reading this book everyday.

Well into this short story book the topic became evident. This was a nice surprise for my 6 year old and I. It captivated her attention and she wanted to have it read to her many times. It was possible on my kindle fire to enlarge the print which is an essential tool for this book to be at all legible. The print (font) is quite small making it very difficult for a beginner reader to read.

I heard Levon Biss on a Ted Talk and had to see the work. He has given the world such a gift to see the beauty and complexity of colors and patterns in the smallest of creatures. This is a good book for anyone who loves art, who loves bugs, or who loves color and patterns.Highly recommend!

This was a gift for my cousin who is an entomologist. He was super excited to get it, apparently he's even met the photographer at a conference! So if you are wondering "will someone who likes bugs like this," the answer is yes.I also looked through it myself before gifting it, and just from a photography standpoint it is incredible and the images are gorgeous. My only issue with this book is that the matte cover shows even the slightest bump or damage. Just accidentally poking it with a fingernail will leave a mark.

I enjoyed this author's TED talk, and especially enjoyed that his young son's curiosity turned him onto a new venture.As he describes it, the boy came in from the back yard with an insect, and father and son took a look at it under ahome microscope. But the mania did not stop there and eventually this artist began taking numerous "tiled" photos of each insect, compiling the segments into gorgeous (large format) prints. They are stunningly beautiful, and I'm so glad to have this book in my art library. (PS: I ordered two of these books, since I knew I wanted to give one to a fellow artist as a gift. The two books without ANY packing materials, bubble wrap, shrink-wrap, or any protection were thrown into a too-large Amazon box, with one strip of their packaging tape. Done! By pure luck these books arrived in OK shape -- but the shipment showed a carelessness that was very disappointing. I so value the books in my library -- I wish the people packing the books at Amazon had the same feeling.)

Absolutely loved this book. Incredibly detailed, which I found very useful in understanding how to create a unique insect in the fantasy world of my novel. The insects portrayed in this novel are of huge variety and from all over the world, giving you that same excitement turning each page as the prior page did.I initially found this in B&N, fell in love with it, then ordered from Amazon. The quality was unmatched, and I ended up getting it two days earlier which came in handy. Overall, I definitely recommend this book even if just for the pictures. The only con I noticed that was due to the design of the book pages and their pure black background, they easily accumulate finger prints and dust - but that doesn't take away from the beauty they behold.

The microsculptures are greatly captured on really good photo's, so there is a lot to discover. You can notice the lot of work the photographer has put in. The only pitty is the poor taxidermy work of the museum on some of the models (insects). Which gives the insect in some cases a very unnatural posture. This highlights the museums collecting point of few more than the grace and beauty of the specimens.But still an amazing work and I am glad I purchased it!

Great photos nice thick paper stock. Wonderful detail very clearly printed. A beautiful book. Interesting choice of insects not the ones everyone is familiar with.

A great book, the only complaint I have is that it had some scuff marks outside and not plastic cover. Other than that the book is great.

The book is very nice, beautiful photos. I did have to return the first one because whom ever packed it was eating greasy food while working and the cover was completely covered in greasy finger prints and inside were bent pages. Second one was at least not bent up, but there was still marking on the cover that I was, fortunately, able to get off.

This is an oddball book. Towards the end I pressed on the Kindle screen to go the next page and discovered it had finished. Just like that.But that was only one of its oddities. It's less of a story than a series of chapters over the forty-plus years of Joe Hackett's life, from his appearance as a toddler at an adult's party, where he's seen as cute, to his unexpected isolation - once again -when he's moved from a parish where he's been working with a curate (a man he's had to work hard to get to like, and vice versa) to one where he's on his own again. We don't find out anything about this parish, but it's plain it's like he's once again been thrust into his own soul without any companion.Hackett becomes a priest (after a Rabelaisian chapter in which he's having sex with two young girls at the same time, as it were), and we journey with him through his hair-shirt days at the Seminary, where he's only marginally popular, through his administration work and his parish work. He never seems to want to enjoy any of these things, though he's good at them all, and known to be by the other priests. Sometimes he's plain obtuse, and refuses to help himself. Sometimes he's right on the button spiritually when no one else seems to be. He's a curious and not altogether likeable character.I couldn't figure out where Powers was going with it all, for quite some time. Got to about 40% of the way through and considered giving up. And yet Powers' writing is such that when he does get going, you can't put the book down.One of the saving graces of the book is the wry, understated humour. It's often satirical, but mostly in the subtlest way. It doesn't take Joe as seriously as he takes himself, which is a gift. And between the humour is the yearning by the reader (and author) for this character to ease up a bit on himself. Not that you want him to be any less spiritual than he is, but you want him to give himself a break. Sainthood isn't achieved by endlessly beating yourself around the head - Joe's equivalent in the later parts of the book of his wearing of the hair-shirt in the earlier parts.He's surrounded by men who are doing their best in a difficult job, and by men who seem just plain gnarly in their approach to the priesthood. And he's concerned about the faith - or lack of it - of many of his parishioners (and some of the priests), and about his own drinking problems (not over the top, but sometimes close to it). And about his loneliness, which he tries to ride roughshod over.I can't say I enjoyed all of it, or found myself at home in it (though, having been brought up as a Catholic, it had a kind of familiarity about it). But it has more depth than it seems, and makes you think more than you realise. I'm not entirely sure, always, about what...there's quite a lot of stuff worth thinking about here!

I've been a fan of the late J F Powers for probably thirty years. Have read his classic novel of the Church in the 1950s, Morte D'Urban (New York Review Books Classics), at least 2-3 times. And also read his three books of stories. Can't figure out how I missed this one, WHEAT THAT SPRINGETH GREEN, his only other novel, first published 25 years ago. In any case, I am most grateful to NYRB Classics imprint for reissuing all of Powers' work again. He was a writer much rspected by other writers, but often neglected and underappreciated by the general reading public, probably because of his never-changing, constant subjects: the priesthood and the Catholic Church. This novel is perhaps even better than Morte D'Urban, set in a midwest diocese at the height of the Vietnam war. Father Joe Hackett is a character that will stay with you for a long time, probably because of his very human faults, his utter 'humanity.' You will laugh and wince in recognition, not just at Hackett, but also at some of the other buffoonish priests and prelates depicted here, like Cooney, Mooney and Rooney. Or at the nicknames given: Shorty and Slug, Catfish, Arch (the Archbishop) and others. It is eye-opening and often a bit sad to watch Joe's gradual transformation as this tale of the modern Church spins out and winds down.A favorite line, indicationg Joe's final loss of innocence - "... believing as he did that the separation of of Church and Dreck was a matter of life and death for the world, that the Church was the one force in the world with a chance to save it ..."There is a kind of redemption for Joe, however, as, in the end, he takes up his "cross." I love this book and hope to find time to read it again some day. But then, "so many books ..." Highly recommended.- Tim Bazzett, author of the memoir, BOOKLOVER

This book accurately captures the intersection between American faith and American life as well as anything I've read since Edwin O'Connor's "Edge of Sadness." Powers writes with a realism that makes all aspects of a parish world come alive. (In particular, I like how he advised the young man seeking guidance about whether to participate in the Vietnam War). What impressed me most about the novel is the way in which Powers crafts sentences in such a simple, but stylized manner. What I initially took for disorganization is actually a type of organization that only illuminates a priest's daily existence.

Wheat took Powers some 25 years to produce, the life of a parish priest in all its vexing details, circa the mid 1960's, suburban USA, told with wit and grace, and remarkable polish. You wonder about relevance the innocence of the American Catholic Church of the sixties as Powers describes it, in the time before the great sex scandals, the cover up. Powers's ability to tell a story is just in a class of its own.

Brilliant, moving ...

Good book. Good story. Some of the dialogue gets a bit clunky. Over a good characters.

Having read Powers' other book, Morte D'Urban, I was hoping for the best, but alas this book simply does not have the depth or the diversity of characters and their interactions. No real surprises either in the plot. Entire book is centered on one character, a somewhat reluctant priest, and his travails of everyday doings, comings and goings. Yes, there is humor in there but it's just not that riotous or spirited.

Though it is a relatively old translation of one of Steiner's basic books, it's a good translation. The new cover gives it an interesting image that adds some mystery and quality to the content.
