This is THE book to get when considering responsive design. The book is divided into clear step-by-step sections to show you what is needed along with code examples online if you want to see it in action. There is so much information packed in each chapter, I typically read each chapter at least twice. It is very clearly written with images to help solidify the concepts. In each chapter there is a two page interview with someone in the field and that person talks about their experience. These were always interesting and added to the understanding of what it's like in the "real" world. I found the side note recommendations for other books, code, and websites very helpful. They allow the book to "extend" in whatever ways you need it to.HIghly recommend.

Excellent book covering more aspects of the responsive design problem than most other books. This includes IE6, 7, and 8 compatibility; mobile-first design, managing fixed-width assets (e.g. AdSense sidebar block images), using em's over %'s in font-size because of mobile zooming considerations, selectively serving reduced sized images to mobile, JavaScript to reduce paragraph sections (on desktop) to a clickable headings (on mobile), and one navigational solution for mobile (clickable drop-down menu). It also covers several tool options for evaluating your responsive implementation and testing it online with mobile emulators.What this book doesn't cover is how JavaScript frameworks (e.g. jQuery) can be used for responsive design, or how to make a Facebook plugin responsive, but this maybe a different book about JavaScript/PHP solutions for responsive design.

I would have liked to see more coding examples and less fluff. There seems to be an over abundance of images and nonsensical ramblings than meaningful content. Also, the responsive design domain has come quite a ways since this book was written so it may behoove you to just walk through a tutorial on Bootstrap or Foundation unless you plan on writing your own responsive framework.

I have a beginner to intermediate level knowledge of HTML and CSS. This book provides great material into the importance of responsive design but lacks its intended purpose of teaching how to implement it. The examples are quickly discussed and vague at best, particularly for a beginner/intermediate.

If you buy only two books on Responsive Design, this should be one of them. (The other would be Ethan Marcotte's "Responsive Web Design".) This book is maybe a tad less code-heavy than the Marcotte book, and provides more and better illustrations. But it does show you CSS code when called for.

This is a color book with a lot of interesting ideas that goes well beyond viewports and media queries. I also like the real world opinionated interviews scattered through the text with full time web designers.Hopefully, we will see another web book from this author in the future.

I liked the explanations and examples. Using this book I was able to put responsive design techniques to work on my current project right away. There is good depth to the explanations so I learned the "why" and the "when" and not just the "how".

I buy this book while researching for responsive design. This book helps me understand better how to make a website responsive and how to approach. He covers the important steps when you want to make a responsive website, media queries, images, fonts, mobile first, performance...The book is well written and was I pleasure to read.

If you're interested in this, you are probably a political science or international relations student, which is a shame because very few general readers would pick this up, and it's those who need it the most, this really deserves to be a best-seller. I majored in biochemistry and am an indie game developer, never took a single class in political science, but on a friend's recommendation who was majoring in that I read this book, and I've re-read it several times over the years, and it's become one of my favorite books (certainly in my top 10 of nonfiction).Basically, this book presents an overarching theory of why wars exist, one that is precise enough to allow even uninformed readers to make predictable, and historically accurate, and precise predictions about when a country will go to war (and why). Most people believe wars to happen for one of several reasons -- "human nature" (because humans just like fighting and are inherently violent or stupid or something), or perhaps the war over religion and ideology, or perhaps over resources. I'd guess that almost everyone believes war happens for one of those reasons.This book dispels that notion very cleanly and completely. After you read it, you'll realize that nations go to war simply because they are afraid. They know that if they lose a war against a greater power, their nation is done for -- it will become occupied, or a puppet state, of a greater power, and lose whatever power they had. Nations do not want that to happen, they are terrified of being dominated by greater nations. And this is a systematic thing, no individual might consciously decide on this, but this is how all nations do seem to work: they are afraid of being conquered, so they go to war to make sure they are the one who conquer, not the one being conquered. This central notion that fear of being conquered by another nation, and not anything else, drives almost all war is the main thesis of the book, and it's argued for very convincingly, with a lot of historical examples.So, the first way a country can be certain it's not going to be conquered by its neighbors is to become the strongest power in its major landmass -- the regional hegemon. Most nations in a position to do so will try to gain regional power -- that is what China is doing in asia, that's what the US did the Americas, and that's what various european countries (e.g. England, France, the Dutch, the Germans, the Russians) have attempted to do for europe, and so on.By this thesis, it may seem counter-intuitive, but according to this idea, the reason Germany went to war was not because they were nationalistic or inherently violent, or because of the ideological differences between fascism, capitalism, and communism, or because wanted to purify Europe of undesirable races, or even that they were angry over the conditions imposed on them after WW1 (though that's part of it), but simply because Germany feared being conquered and wanted to become the most powerful nation in Europe to make sure they would survive.This is a *very* different understanding of war than most people have, I want to emphasize that again. And it sounds strange at first, but this book will probably convince you of it (as evidence, Germany in WW1 had a very different ideology, but the conditions were somewhat similar, and they still went to war, for the same reason they did go to war in WW2. Sometimes WW1 is blamed on entangling alliances or the assassination of an archduke, but, in reality, according to this theory, Germany went to war in WW1 for the exact same reason they want to war in WW2, because they saw an opportunity to become local hegemon of Europe, and took that opportunity).If you still aren't convinced, that isn't of course the job of this review, it's the job of the book; the number of examples used in the book far exceed would I could bring up here. And the author's writing is much better than mine in any case. I'm just trying to explain why I like the book: because it gives you a different opinion of war than the usual one, and does so very convincingly, through factual argument, and explains it in a simple to understand way (you don't need to have even taken a political science course to follow along with the argument).

The Tragedy of Great Power Politics is an accessible history of great power behavior since the 18th century. John Mearsheimer is a professor at the University of Chicago. Mearsheimer believes that once countries become economically strong they seek to dominate their region militarily. They “are always searching for opportunities to gain power over their rivals, with hegemony as their final goal.” He calls this “offensive realism.” In the final chapter, he discusses the rise of China and predicts that it will attempt to dominate Asia. He believes that this will lead to conflict with the US.To prove his theory, Mearsheimer examines the behavior of five countries over the last 200 years: Japan (1868-1945), Germany (1862-1945), Soviet Union (1917-1991), Britain (1792-1945), and the U.S. (1800-1990). Japan and the Soviet Union provide strong support for the theory. Before WW2 Japan was imperialistic and invaded Korea, China, and the Soviet Union. Its attempts to become an Asian hegemon inevitably led to its clash with the U.S. Russia has always been an imperialistic power and over the centuries expanded its empire from Europe to the Pacific coast. During the Soviet era, it grabbed Eastern Europe.Germany is an example of how offensive realism can lead to disaster. After reunification in 1871, Germany started to flex its muscles and frighten its neighbors. By 1900 it had overtaken Britain to become Europe's largest economy. Russia, France, and Britain initially formed a defensive alliance, but this did not deter Germany, it just became more paranoid. Mearsheimer argues that it was inevitable that a powerful Germany would try to dominate Europe. However, historians like Margaret MacMillan believe that war could have been avoided had Bismarck still been around. Unfortunately for Germany, Japan, and the Soviet Union, they were not allowed to dominate for long. They became victims of their own ambition and this seems to be the main weakness of offensive realism as a survival strategy.Britain is not a good fit for Mearsheimer's theory. It was never interested in dominating Europe. It controlled 59% of global wealth in 1860 but it never tried to conquer Europe. Mearsheimer claims that the English Channel made invasion too difficult. However, Britain's traditional strategy was to contain potential threats by manipulating either Germany or France. This did not stop Britain aggressively grabbing territory in parts of the world where it faced little or no opposition.Mearsheimer claims that Britain was too weak to stop the U.S. taking over its Caribbean colonies in the 19th century. Apparently, the U.S. resisted the temptation to invade because the British colonies kept slaves. He does not seem aware that Britain ended slavery long before the U.S. The main reason the US did not attack was Britain's navy. For much of the 19th century, the U.S. lacked the military strength to prevent European intervention in the New World. But since European meddling threatened British as well as American interests, the Monroe Doctrine was enforced by the Royal Navy. At the end of the 19th century, America could deploy two battleships to Britain’s forty-four.Mearsheimer describes the U.S. as the "poster child for offensive realism." Mearsheimer sets out a narrative to explain how American foreign policy developed over the centuries. He argues that it first dominated the Western Hemisphere before extending its reach to Asia and Europe. The invasion of Canada in 1812 and the Monroe Doctrine were part of a plan to dominate the Americas. Once that was achieved the U.S. stopped Japan and Germany dominating Asia and Europe in the 20th century. The U.S. continued to view the British Empire as a threat and Roosevelt set about dismantling it during WW2. Once WW2 was won, the Soviet Union became America’s new adversary and it maintained forces in Europe to check Soviet expansion, but also to prevent the Europeans from fighting each other.Mearsheimer argues that the U.S. is often in denial about its behavior and Americans are taught that the U.S. is altruistic and a force for good in the world. Mearsheimer states that “idealist rhetoric provided a proper mask for the brutal policies that underpinned the tremendous growth of American power.” In 1991 the U.S. became the world's only super-power and according to Mearsheimer, its main foreign policy objective was to prevent the re-emergence of a new rival. Following the difficult wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the U.S. is less certain of its global role. Mearsheimer claims that America's foreign policy elite is still largely made up of offensive realists, but these days they prefer to keep their views under wraps.Mearsheimer believes that the rise of China brings a new set of problems. America is facing its first serious economic competitor since it overtook Britain in the 19th century. He predicts that China will pose a threat to U.S. dominance in Asia. Mearsheimer is worried that if nationalists in China continue to pursue a policy of "Asia for the Asians" this will make future conflict inevitable.I found the book an enjoyable read but Mearsheimer has a surprisingly superficial grasp of world history. Very well written. I had no prior knowledge of the oil industry before I started reading and was surprised in the first few chapters as it reads like a story, which is a wonderful way set the stage for the more techinical subjects. I also found the detailed pictures and charts to be very helpful along with the 8.5x11 book size. The font size is also a good size, not to big nor small.

This book has essentially no information on "investing" in oil and gas companies. There are no outlines of the listed companies involved, no real numbers on cost structures nor how these vary between shale and offshore etc. There is also very little about oil and gas outside the US. The book should more accurately be called The Fundamentals Of Oil and Gas Production as it mainly covers the geology behind different types of oil deposits, the various drilling techniques, and alternative refined product types. There are plenty of facts about these matters but relatively few on the financial aspects of direct investment in this area. I purchased the book quickly after observing the large number of five star reviews. It is amazing how many early five star reviewers have never reviewed another book before or since.

This is quite simply not a good book. Beyond the fact the author seems to assume I am off to dig for oil myself (that seems to be the "investing" part of the title), it is very poorly written, making for an an incredibly boring read, even when the author himself seems genuinely excited. Do not be fooled by the interesting first chapter about the history of oil.

It was a great book for a person who is interested in o&g operations, but there was very little content describing investment strategies. If you are someone who is interested in finding more about how oil is discovered, drilled, transported and refined, this will be a great read. If you are interested in discovering how to wisely invest in these operations, you might want to look somewhat else.

This book was enjoyable to read. It has a lot of information that I wasnt expecting to find. I am a novice and found it to be written in a very non technical language which I found to be essential. I found the operational aspect of developing oil and gas projects from start to finish to be inspiring to say the least. The author seems to focus on management and proven assets instead of hear say numbers of a so called profitable company which I find to be an important part to any investment. I was slightly surprised to to find out some of the ways oil companies inflate there assets. I also thought the overall structure was well done too. It starts with the history of the industry oil and then explains natural gas as everyone is talking about how that is the next big thing. then the focus moves how these commodities are formed and found. The operations of developing these resources is explained next in great detail that is easy to understand for a novice. Once the oil or natural gas is found then it is transported and the strategies, logistics and people are outlined very well. The refining is also of importance as it shows the challenges for the commodity like natural gas to replace oil in the future. The end is very interesting as it bring the book together with potential future outcomes and trading of finished products along with the specifications of each product. Try not to skip chapters if possible as I found it to be important to know all details of the industry, I strongly believe that you have to know the challenges of the future, the difficulties it is currently facing and the yearly cycles of the industry in order to be successful. Understanding what a company does from day to day is the most important thing and the same can be said about the managers, CEO's and brokers that your money goes towards. Know every aspect of it all with this book before jumping into the industry for the first time and if you were in a deal that didnt turn out as well as you thought then this book might help you understand why and who is at fault if anyone.

As a novice to this industry, I felt the author did a perfect job of providing detail and explanation, while avoiding the arcane and extremely complex. The illustrations are cool. Language in book is straightforward and not too scientific.After reading the chapters on drilling a well, I was able to read up on Deepwater Horizon disaster and understand most of what went wrong. The author explains blowout preventers, well cement, casing width, etc...The book is an excellent investment in time and money for anyone wanting understand the fundamentals of the petroleum industry.

Well written and informative on the every aspect of the down, mid, and upstream sectors of the oil and natural gas industry. Very helpful resource for a novice investor like myself.

There is nothing actually wrong with this book. If you are interested in learning about how oil and gas drilling works, and how it is organized, and so on, this is a fine reference work.However, the title is "Investing in Oil and Gas". I thought that would tell me things like how to read the 10-K reports, what risk factors to look for, how to evaluate oil and gas investments based on their stock market fundamentals, and so on. Unfortunately there is not a word on those topics, so unless you are interested in investing directly in oil and gas drilling in your own company, as opposed to through the stock market, this may not be a terribly helpful work.

The critical thinking, decision-making and skills assessments were pointless and didnt relate back to the actual test at all. The online practice tests were formatted completely different than the actual test so that could have been improved.

This is described cogently and with authority by van de Walle and Bleck in this sweeping overview of fledgling democracy in Africa.The authors make a clear distinction between electoral politics and democratization, and note that though elections are now increasingly a routine event in many African countries this does not mean necessarily that great progress has been made towards the practice of democracy. As in many developing countries, electoral politics are characterized by patronage, clientelism and corruption.Nevertheless, the authors point to a series of benefits brought by the electoral process. In addition to the obvious good of creating at least the possibility of alternating political currents and the hope that with time the habit of holding elections will lead to more functional democracies, the authors identify various important corollary benefits. For example, election campaigns force politicians to interact with marginalized voters (e.g. rural voters) which they normally ignore, expanding citizenry expectations. The repeated process of voting also may create an attachment to responsive and accountable government. As citizen consciousness rise, dominant ruling parties get shaken out of their complacency, motivating them to better seek betterments for the general population.This interesting and well argued book boosts optimism on the prospects for African development. This book started slowly and I set it aside often, but eventually the story picked up the pace, or at least piqued my interest, so I’m glad I continued reading. I found Joy to be a warm and endearing character. I cheered her determination and her fierce desire to maintain her independence as she ages. She faces the obstacles and fears with stoicism, alarm, resignation and pluck, in equal measure. This isn’t a particularly humorous book, at least not as “hilarious” as it touted to be. There are funny moments, but more often, it is sobering, sad and unflinching. The book looks starkly at what it means to age in today’s society, a society that worships youth and busy-ness and health. We all age, and we may all eventually reach the age that Joy has achieved. Yet, Joy’s children, Daniel and Molly, have the self-satisfied air of relative youth, as if age will never come for them too. Molly and Daniel are portrayed as harried and well-meaning, career-driven and each raising children of their own, while trying to keep an eye on their widowed mother. Their easy smugness is nearly insufferable. Molly is especially irritating and wearying. As “adult children” caring for an aging parent, their sympathy is wrapped in duty, self-absorption, obligation, impatience, greed and too-little empathy and compassion. Not exactly light reading. This book will resonate most with older readers who are facing change, retirement, illness, bereavement and aging, against the backdrop of intricate and complicated family bonds. A good read with insight and wisdom into what it means to be elderly.

I bought this book upon the recommendation of a friend, who empathized with the challenges of being the adult children of aging parents. This book helped me realize that many people are facing these challenges, not the least of all the aging adults themselves! I read the entire book in one day. It's not a "happy" book, but I did laugh aloud at times, as well as held back some tears. I recommend this book to others on this journey, for increased understanding of all sides of aging, and for feeling comforted that we are not alone in this.

This is a very special book. I bought it after hearing a review and thinking I would relate to Molly, the daughter who moved far away from her parents and can barely endure the guilt she suffers since committing this "geographic treachery." As I read, though, I ended up with the strongest attachment to Joy, Molly's mother, who, at 85, has transitioned from a life she loved to one she hardly recognizes. As her losses---like her mail---pile up around her, I kept expecting her to fold, admit defeat, and allow her children to take control of her life. That would be the easiest road to take, right? Wrong, says Joy's heart. Sharing this part of Joy's life, watching her struggle to hold on to both her family and her independence, was a great literary joy (!) for me. I treasure the memory of this book, as well as the perspective it gave me on my own mother, who is, I see now, the Joy in my own life. As I said, this is a very special book.

This book had me laughing out loud which isn't easy when you're a hospice patient. And time is running out. It's not morbid in the least, and gives you a view of the mother's thinking vs. that of her well meaning children. It would make a good movie if the right actors could be found.J.Nielsen

The author fleshes out her characters well. Both the aged and youthful family members may not mean to hurt, age, die impose their will on others, but they do. I'm very picky about the books I purchase about western occultism. After purchasing this book, I was happy with the content. It wasn't on the same level as David Griffin, but it gave me what I needed in a supplemental Golden Dawn resource.I've read many reviews on "Self-Initiation...". I respect the differing opinions presented therein. They appear to fall into a few categories:Those that are members and like it as a supplemental resourceThose that are members and don't respect the concept of self-initiation, or learn magick from a book without mentorshipThose that are beginners to magick; or atleast to ceremonial magick and are frightened by the depth of curriculumI belong to the first group. I have been initiated by two ceremonial groups and one Wiccan group. I have over 20 years experience with different paths. I chose to study the Golden Dawn system, though I am reluctant to join the Golden Dawn, because I have an affinity to other Gods than typically used for the group. However, with my experience, it isn't that difficult to utilize corresponding archetypes. As far as utilizing planetary, zodiac, and various other concepts that scare the beginner; I think that before taking on such a task, some formal training and mentorship is essential. With this training in place, it is very practical to use this book.I agree that if you want to be officially recognized within a particular grade, then-by all means-join the Golden Dawn. If however, you simply want the training, this is not a bad resource.

The rituals in this book are very daunting. You are asked to visualize like 40 characters and interact with them during ritual. This is because in a Golden Dawn ritual in a real temple, all these people would be there. If you are already self-initiating, it seems illogical to pretend you are there, recieving a real initiation; you are not. I haven't decided if I will follow the ceremonies as written or drop the characters and make the ceremonies between me and the Universe.There is also strong debate as to if one can truly be self-initiated into the Golden Dawn. The book will hold value to your personal spirituality and practice of magic but a lodge will not recognize you as initiated. I go back and forth on what I believe about this.It is important to note that this kind of magic deals with evoking spirits, dealing with forces and energies and tinkering with nature. Magic is like chemistry, a self taught chemist might burn himself or burn his house down. The more I study about this type of stuff, the more I realize that without proper training from a sorcerer or magician, you will dabble in a muddy mix of spirits and energies and risk bad things happening to you. I am willing to practice this magic to an extent, but to truly deal with the spirits one should be trained.I invite others to leave their own understanding as comments to help me out.

I rate this a 3 because, while very detailed, there was little overview a what concepts were holistically. I summary of concept at the beginning and concluding at the end of each section would have pulled it all together for me. Often concepts overlap and seem repetitive to the point where it becomes confusing when advancement level differ by seeming trivial detail.This is an okay book, but I'm not sure I got the message.

The Self Initiation into the Golden Dawn has been something I have been looking forward to for a while. Basically this will do exactly that, and do it well. However do not look to this book for more abstract or advanced magical practices or mental development; this really is just the start and some may consider it an unnecessary formality. I probably do. That, however, does not take away from the fact that this book does exactly what it says it was and that is why I give it a four star rating. Yes this is a sizable book at a low cost but size is hardly as important as content and certainly does not make up for it.Realistically the modern magician is going to probably need or at least want a personal library of many subject related text which comes with a hefty price tag. This should be one of those books, and at about 25$, it will be one of the less expensive additions to your collection.These authors are also very good to check out:Franz BardonLiz Greene

I've found this useful in comprehending the process of initiation through the Golden Dawn schools. However, to truly have a self-initiated experience, I think one would need to have an extra resource at their disposal for a more in-depth look. This book along with David Griffin's "Ritual Magick Manual" will do wonders for the solitaries wishing to dedicate to the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn path.

Excellent resource for those working the Golden Dawn Initiatory path. Outside of the "self-initiation debate". This is a great resource that has almost all of the theoretical background on the Golden Dawn System of magick. If you wanted to be a minimalist, you could get by with just this book and Dave Griffin's "Ritual Magick Manual". These two books will have you doing Golden Dawn Ritual magick right away.This book as all the knowledge lectures and initiation rituals of the Golden Dawn's outer order. It also adds the needed astrology.

Good supplement to Israel Regardie's Golden Dawn book. The Rituals would be rather difficult to preform alone but not beyond those who apply themselves to the task. Not a shortcut but just another tool to the path.

Overexpanded curriculum on all the grades of the outer order of the G.*.D.*., This book will definitely assist one throughout each grade whether in an order or working as a solo practitioner.
